Even though the body appears to be material, it is not. In the deeper reality, your body is a field of energy, transformation and intelligence.

Percentage of our life in “poor or moderate” health. We’ve added 19 years to global lifespan since 1960, but the percentage of life in “poor or moderate” health hasn’t changed. (McKinsey Institute)

From the Lab

Thump! What the hell was that??

At 1:30am, my 2-yr old was doing his best version of David Blaine trying to escape from his crib. After a few hours of getting him tired, I could finally go back to bed.

Tomorrow was going to be a long day.

It’s not really about the lack of sleep last night - it’s about the lack of energy in the morning.

Energy is the ability of things in the universe to do work; to move or manipulate a thing; to create change.

Everything we do is based on having the energy and capacity to make the most of our day.

That’s one of the central pillars of being able to THRIVE.

Yet most of us are lacking energy - maybe without realizing it as it simply becomes the new normal. 93% of us have less than ideal metabolic health - that is we don’t meet at least one (1) of the five (5) criteria below:

That’s why we all need to think of ourselves as “athletes.” (Issue #181).

Health isn’t about running a marathon or fasting for 24 hours - it’s about being able to actively play outside with our kids, focus on a big project at work, or go out to dinner with friends after a full day of work and exercise - all without feeling exhausted.

Here’s how I attacked my day (just happens to be 10-steps) after the rough wake up call in the middle of the night:

  • Move - I still keep with my routine of 25 push-ups next to the bed 💪

  • Hydrate - started the day with hot water, lemon, salt and kept filling up my Thrive25 water bottle (study) 🚰

  • Outside - dropped off my kids and took a 30 min outdoor walk in sunshine along the water ☀️

  • Fuel - loaded up with my go-to smoothie recipe (Issue #2) full of whole foods & vitamins to boost immune function 🥬

  • Breathe - 15 min breathwork exercise to engage my parasympathetic nervous system 🫁

  • Mindset - focused on everything good in my life 😊

  • Schedule - moved my “intense” work to afternoon and “tasks” to morning 📅

  • Hot/Cold Therapy - skipped the workout for a sauna/cold plunge ♨️

  • Laugh - all my wife and I can do about these crazy nights 🤣

  • Sleep - back on track for 7+ hrs with my evening routine (Issue #11) 🛏️

Don’t accept low energy - it’s NOT the new normal.

Health & Longevity in the News

Mental Health for…iOS App Developers: As part of expanding health initiatives, Apple is launching a journaling app to support mental health. This may be a free app, which is good for us, but also may have “sherlocked” a few products from existing iOS App Developers. (WSJ)

Stem Cell Junk Yard Squirrel: Research from UCSD has uncovered exactly how blood stem cells work with misfolded (or junk) proteins. Previously, it was believed the waste was broken down immediately, but the study showed the junk is instead stored away until needed. This recycling process breaks down with age - better knowing how it works will help create drugs to target it and reverse the effect. (WIRED)

Starring You as the Next Incredible Hulk: Move over Lou Ferrigno, Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo. Now you can be the Hulk in Marvel Move, a fitness app in partnership with Six to Start (makers of Zombies! Run with 10M active players). It’s not just Bruce, or Hulk, or Bruce-Hulk - you can choose from five Marvel storylines. (TechCrunch)

Thursday Night In | Spicy Shrimp Tacos

I had similar tacos last night at a restaurant and Max had this recipe last week. We love tacos 🌮! This recipe is great if you love shrimp, but it’s elevated by the crema. Save any extra crema for the next day for some new tacos or as a dip…it’s that good.
