Health is a state of complete mental, social and physical well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Inspiration

Two athletes just spent 3 months training for a race and are primed to crush their personal best…

The weather forecast called for rain, wind, even tornadoes - but fortunately the front passes through the night before and by the start of the race the sun begins to shine through the low clouds.

No matter how many races you’ve completed, there’s always jitters at the starting line. You try to figure out how you’re feeling - lots of energy in the legs, a little heavy? Should you start out fast with the crowd and let adrenaline carry you or pace yourself at the beginning and find your own rhythm.

The first leg of the run goes as planned.

(PROGRAMMING NOTE: The swim was canceled due to rip currents so the race was run-bike-run).

Both guys break an early sweat and quickly get past the initial energy drain when your muscles need more oxygen and blood flow than the body is ready to deliver. 🏃

No problems so far. Everything is working - the legs are moving well and it seems like everything is going well for both racers. The transition to the bike is seamless - quick drink, change of shoes, throw on the helmet and off on the bike. 🚴

But, by mile 5 of the bike both guys start to hit a wall - actually they hit a 35mph headwind.

No personal records will be set today.

Twenty miles later, both guys get off their bikes at the same time to finish with a 10K run still to go before the end the race. Both are staggering and feeling the weight of their legs trying to move.

But that’s where the similarities end.

One guy thinks “this sucks - why don't my legs work today after all my training?" and "what are the odds it would be so windy on the day of the race?" He proceeds to fight through the next hour trapped in tunnel vision fixated on their slow pace - unable to appreciate the beautiful day that has transpired, while running along the water. 😡

The other guy, though, takes a completely different perspective on the day. “What an awesome course - can’t believe the sun came out. Amazing all these volunteers showed up as early as 5am to block off the streets, pass out water, and cheer me on. Not a bad Sunday morning!” That runner takes in the energy of the course and says thank you probably 100+ times to all the people that helped make the race possible. 🙏

They cross the finish line at the same time - below their personal bests and even their lowest expectations. But one guy had a miserable morning, while the other greets his family with a big smile on his face.

Every day we encounter events we can’t control - like the wind. Sometimes the sales prospect says yes and sometimes says no - heck sometimes they don’t even pick up the phone. Sometimes our kids get sick on days when we have 8 meetings back-to-back. And sometimes it rains when we take off one day of work to go to the beach.

Life is about how we react and respond to these events. We can choose to focus on the muscle cramps and the wind OR we can choose to focus on the sunshine and the hundreds of people handing us water to get us across the finish line.

You decide.

(If this was Netflix we’d say this was “inspired by real-life events”, but this is a completely true story)

What We’re Reading | The Inner Game of Tennis

Just went back and re-read The Inner Game of Tennis. Originally published back in 1972, this book is a simple, yet awesome, read on how to get out of your way and trust your instincts. Most of sports - and the rest of life - is played in our head. I just think about the nerves I get on the first tee box that somehow go away by the next hole. This book might be about tennis (Gallwey’s since written about golf, work and other aspects of life) - but the analogies hold for everything we do to help us get out of our head and live our own life.

Bucket List | Islands of Tahiti

It’s so far, but being remote is the point. Max missed out on a trip to Tahiti for his honeymoon…he had to settle for Greece (don’t tell my wife - we still haven’t had ours yet thanks to our daughter being a complete surprise pregnancy while we were engaged, but I digress).

118 islands spread across the Austral, Gambier, Marquesas, Society and Tuamotu islands - the Tahitian Islands are some of the most idyllic in the world. Swim, dive, sail, hike, surf, paddleboard…you name it.
