Issue #181: 2 Truths About Your Identity

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 2nd.

In case you missed yesterday’s email, we’re changing our schedule to send out Thrive25 issues on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

This will help give more time to take in everything from the previous issue and not feel like you have to “keep up” with all the actions and tips. We hope this only improves your experience with Thrive25, but would love thoughts/feedback from you HERE (it’s quick and anonymous!).

We can define what we do, but what we do should not define us.

From the Lab

As I struggled through the run in the triathlon this weekend, I thought a lot about motivation

Why did I sign up for the race in the first place? Why am I still running when it’s obvious my legs want me to stop?

The most effective form of motivation is when a habit or action is tied to our identity (see Issue #92 with research from James Clear).

For me - I’ve always identified myself as an athlete. No - I’ve never been paid to compete in any sports (although I’ve hit quite a few game-winning 3’s in my dreams). But to me - an athlete is anyone who puts their health first and doesn’t let it stop them from living their best life.

If I want to hike Half Dome at Yosemite or if I want to surf the North Shore (not when there’s 8+ ft waves) or if I want to try any new sport or play pickup anything - I’m able to say without hesitation “let’s go.”

More recently - my identity has evolved to include being a dad and now a founder.

What’s Your Identity?

Everyone’s answer will be unique - here’s two things that are true for all of us:

1. Your Identity Is Based on Actions, Not Thoughts

In our minds we have a vision of who we really are. But if those thoughts are stuck inside our heads and don’t come out into the world - then is that reality?

Your priorities are a reflection of what you do, how you actually spend your time - not just what you say or think is important. Did you make time for your kids, your partner, or your friends? What would they say about you?

2. Your Identity Needs to Include Health

I’ll tell you right now that whether you define yourself as - an advocate, a connector, a leader, a problem-solver, a parent, a spokesperson - you can’t succeed without your health.

To live out your identity to its fullest potential you need:

  1. Energy (metabolic health)

  2. Purpose (mental health)

  3. Joy (social health)

So what kept me going during the race?

  • As an athlete, I knew I was capable of finishing the race

  • As a dad, I wanted to show my kids the ethos of grit and perseverance

  • As a founder, I wanted to help inspire others that are looking for their own new challenges

Hope it worked - my legs are sore. 😅

Health & Longevity in the News

Vices & Addictions: Author and Professor Scott Galloway speaks to the issues preventing us from our best health & happiness - great podcast listen with Dhru Purohit.

Are you a Skyrunner?: Max and I can’t even imagine it coming off the race Sunday. It’s a combination of trail running and mountaineering. For up to 50 miles. A mile above sea level. Is this for you? With roots in the Italian Alps, it has an appropriate tagline: “Less cloud. More sky.” (WSJ)

More Our Speed Today: We talk about yoga a lot - depending on your practice, you can combine mobility exercises with breathing and meditation - no better trio. Intentionality and the connection of mind and body appear to be the foundation for yoga’s key benefits: stress relief, better sleep, improved cognition, reduced back pain. (NYTimes)

Tuesday QR | Chinese Chicken Salad

Super simple and healthy recipe. You should have most of the ingredients - just need some leftover chicken for this low-carb salad.

*Option to replace Allulose with 1⅔ tsp honey or ⅔ tsp monk fruit

PRO TIP: Always go organic for the veggies when possible!
