Inspiration

“I’m 40 and the stronger mentally and physically than I’ve ever been.”

That’s from my sister, Becky, who just had a big birthday this week, and recently completed 500 burpees in 51 minutes!

While I was playing sports, she spent her childhood dancing - a lot. I didn’t fully appreciate it (or her) at the time, but she was an incredible talent when it came to dance. Looking back she’ll say that it was her way of finding structure, expression, challenge, and release.

So how does a dancer transition into a CrossFit badass??

She had never lifted a weight in her entire life. But at a charity event, she was subconsciously looking for new challenges and inspiration and she bid on a free one-month CrossFit membership. That was it.

She was hooked - now 4-5 days a week she joins the 5:30am Tangletown (MN) CrossFit crew - doing deadlifts, snatches, and pull-ups.

My Sis

Why does she get up at 4:55am nearly every day?

First - it’s the pure nature of the workout. She’s never been stronger (umm - she can now deadlift 255 lbs, what!?!?) and for the first few months every workout meant learning something new that she’d never done before. That physical health directly ties into her mental health.

No matter what she can’t control the rest of her day (she has two girls 7 and 3, plus a demanding career) she can always start it off with an awesome sweat.

Second - and just as important, she found a new community. We’ve talked a lot about social well-being and how relationships define the quality of our life (Issue #40). She’s found a new tribe that inspires her to achieve her goals and holds her accountable to get up with her alarm.

“My greatest accomplishment has been navigating and prioritizing physical and mental health through the birth and raising of two kiddos. You have to be your best self so you can be the best partner and parent – that’s what I aspire to do every day. I want to show my amazing daughters that age doesn’t matter – you can grow, try new things, and challenge yourself at any stage of life.”

Here’s to you Beck! I probably won’t be joining any 5:30am classes anytime soon - but I’ll be trying to keep up at the gym and in how to raise my little ones.

For all of us looking to be our best after 40!

Brain Games | Too Many Socks!

I can never get sock matches for my 2-yr old. It inspired this brain teaser:

Drew has 53 socks in his drawer: 21 blue socks, 15 black socks and 17 red socks. The lights are out and he is completely in the dark.

How many socks must he take out to make 100 percent certain he has at least one pair of black socks?

Thanks for another great week! Here’s what Max and I will be pumping at 6am on Sunday trying to get ready for the race - have an awesome weekend everyone!
