Rocky Mountain National Park

For our summer vacation we took an early trip to the Rockies.

It was the perfect combination of sunshine and mild temps with trails still partially covered in snow - which is a really big deal for a couple of kids from FL.

Hiking the Rockies

The most impressive thing was my kids hiking 2+ miles everyday at over 9,000 feet. We got them pumped with their own hiking shoes and backpacks and they were often leading the charge on the trail.

My daughter even got her Junior Ranger badge - not sure I’ve ever seen a bigger smile of pride as she read her oath to protect our National Parks.

When you go - make sure you get a 7-day park pass ($35) before you land in Denver and then make specific reservations for Bear Lake Road each day you want to enter the park. (Recreation.gov app)

If you take kids or are looking for the best “moderate” hikes in the park - don’t miss - Alberta Falls and Dream Lake (both from the Bear Lake Trailhead), Chasm Falls, and Trail Ridge Road (highest road in the Lower 48).

Six variables today - A, B, C, D, E, F - with seven possible values - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6. None of the variables can share the same number. Based on the following equations, what do the variables equal:

  1. A + E ≤ 3

  2. C + D ≤ 8

  3. B + C ≤ 8

  4. C + E = D

  5. D + E ≤ 5

** Brain Games Answer **

Answer: Yellow are the values for the variables. A=2, B=5, etc.

Why?…

  • First, plug D from equation (4) into (5). (C + E) + E ≤ 5. This equates to C + 2E ≤ 5. For this to be true, E is in the set {1,2} and C = {1,2,3}

  • Next look at equation (1), A + E ≤ 3. This means A and E are either 1 or 2, because of this, C = 3

  • Next, onto equation (5) , D + E ≤ 5. If E is either 1 or 2 (a.k.a., = {1,2}), then D = {3,4}, so D = 4

  • Then look at equation (3), B + C ≤ 8. We know C = 3, so B ≤ 5. But we know {A,E} = {1,2}, so B = {5,6}, so B = 5 and F = 6

  • Last, equation (4), C + E = D, rearrange to E = D - C. E = 4 - 3, so E = 1 and A = 2
