If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.
— Mother Teresa

Traveling today or tomorrow? You’re not alone - nearly 50 million Americans will be getting in the car to go more than 50 miles and another 5 million will be getting on a plane to visit friends and family for Turkey Day. (AAA)

From the Lab

I feel like I’m back in college. Life’s so busy that it’s like taking exams before winter break - trying to get everything done before (hopefully) a few days to slow down.

We’re all so consumed with our everyday life that it takes an annual holiday like Thanksgiving to stop us from the never-ending cycle for a rare visit with friends and family, and to take even the slightest break from our own perpetual treadmill.

But, we’re not just talking about this because it’s Thanksgiving - relationships impact our longevity just like food, sleep, and working out.

A study of those 57 to 85 showed over a 50% reduction in all-cause 5-yr mortality (dying in the next 5 years) if they felt “extremely close” to family members.

Another study shows that if you get along with your sibling, you reduce risk of depression and report being happier.

So take a break from your own race (not talking about the Turkey Trot) and connect with your friends and family this week.

At the end of our lives, only the most meaningful threads of our existence remain. What floats to the top are our relationships.
— Dr. Vivek Murthy, U.S. Surgeon General

Here’s our Turkey Day Challenge this year:

Make Someone Feel Seen

Humans need recognition as much as food and water. We crave connection - even if we don’t always know it.

But it’s not just sitting next to someone to pass the potatoes. It’s not just about asking your uncle - “how’s it’s going in Scottsdale?” or your cousin “what’s it like dating these days?”

Go beyond the superficial questions and actually get into a real conversation.

Actually listen to what’s happening in their life. Ask another question - what they’re celebrating, what they’re navigating.

Consider life in their shoes.

John Stuart Mill said - “The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them.

Not many of us get along with everyone around the dinner table this week - but that doesn’t mean it’s not important to make them feel seen and heard.

Want longevity? Connect with your friends and family this week!

Health & Longevity in the News

A Little Bit More: “Having more money would solve most of my problems.” Would it? And how much do you need? As you can imagine, the more you have, the more you want. But there are other currencies that drive our happiness besides money - invest in time and your health/energy. (WSJ)

Regenerative Medicine, the Next Frontier: Jumpstarting natural biological processes may lead to more effective and longer-lasting outcomes than traditional symptomatic relief. Advancements in stem cell research, 3D bioprinting, gene editing, tissue engineering, etc. will lead to personalized treatments and the potential to cure chronic diseases. (Source)

Goodbye Hypercholesterolemia?: A recent study of only 10 patients, shared promising results for lowering cholesterol. The patients all had severe heart disease and a genetic abnormality that impacts 1M Americans - familial hypercholesterolemia. Medications did not help, but the study’s new gene editing approach did. This could have major impacts on heart disease, but also the potential application of safe, cost-effective gene editing for other conditions. (NYTimes)
