Issue #267: 1,000 Hours

Good morning. It’s Saturday, November 18th.

Today’s Quick Win

  • Inspiration: 1,000 Hours…

  • What We’re Reading: Perception

  • Moment of Fun: Crammed Thanksgiving

  • Brain Games: Rich People Problems

  • Question: Experimentation

Our perceptions are as unique as our individual fingerprints.
— Richard Johnson

Kids ages 8-18 now spend, on average, 7.5 hours in front of a screen for entertainment each day, 4.5 on TV. Over a year, that adds up to over 114 full days watching a screen for fun or 2,738 hours. (CDC)

This Week

This week we explored how reality is really just our perception of what we see, and how our perception changes depending on our health.

Issue #265 - our perception of reality is shaped by more than just sensory input; it's influenced by physical abilities, energy levels, and emotions. Challenges can seem less daunting and goals more achievable.

Issue #266 - studies reveal that fitter individuals and those in better moods perceive challenges, like the steep hill from Issue #265, as less daunting. Conversely, sadness can literally alter how we see our surroundings, making the hill appear larger and steeper.

Inspiration | 1,000 Hours

No - this isn’t about becoming an Outlier (or I guess 1/10th of an Outlier).

It’s a target number of the amount of time to be outside every year.

We talked about the benefits of getting outside in Issues #161-165, 218, and 219.

Research coming out of the University of Oregon tells us what innately we already know - we’re meant to be outside in nature, not glued to our many, many screens inside.

But it’s easier to say I’m going to try to do it than to actually set a goal and stick with it.

That’s where 1,000 Hours Outside comes in.

It’s a worldwide campaign to get all of us outside 12 months a year.

Yes - it focuses on kids specifically (remember Stat, they spend 2,738 hours a year watching a screen). But it’s just as relevant for the rest of us.

I guarantee that if you write down how you feel at the end of the day that included at least an hour outside, it’ll be more positive - regardless of what else happened with work, family, etc. - than if you stayed indoors.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a parent, a grandparent or without kids - getting outside should be one of the top priorities for the day.

It doesn’t matter if you live in a city or don’t have hiking trails - any park, backyard, or walk will do.

And it doesn’t matter that it’s freezing cold outside - here’s a calendar from 1000 Hours Outside:

They even have a tracker to make sure you make it to your 1000+ hours. Or, you can also check out Thrive25 partner, NatureQuant - it’s the anti-app that helps you without looking at your phone (tracking your time in nature).

Don’t dread the coming dark, cold months of winter - to make the most of it, get outside!

What We’re Reading | Perception

We referenced this book 5x this week. Over decades of research, U of Virginia psychologist Dennis Proffitt argues there are 8.1 Billion active realities. Each one of us sees the world differently - based on physical health, mental health, our mood, our senses, our sense of community and everything in between.

If we are able to understand our body and know how it interprets the world, and master how to elevate this understanding, we can achieve greater athletic, academic and professional performance.

Moment of Fun | Crammed Thanksgiving

Getting prepped for next Thursday (and when I get to see this guy live in December!)…

Brain Games | Rich People Problems

Mr. Jenkins is trying to find a butler he can really trust. Out of the four candidates, James, Hudson, Paul, and Steven, he knows that two are honest and the other two are compulsive liars. From what each one of them says, can you work out which two are the liars?

  • JAMES: “Neither Paul nor Hudson tells the truth.”

  • HUDSON: “If Steven is a liar, then James is trustworthy.”

  • PAUL: “If, and only if, James is not an honest person, then Steven, too, has a rather loose attitude to the truth.”

  • STEVEN: “What Paul said is untrue.”

Weekend Q | Experimentation

How will you experiment with perception?

Consider this at Thanksgiving dinner - transport yourself into someone else’s shoes.

Try to understand a story they’re telling from their perspective. And then reflect on the story from your POV. What changes, how different do you see the world? How might this impact you tomorrow?

The better we can understand what our bodies are - what they excel at, what they need, what they must avoid - the better we can live our lives.
— Dennis Proffitt
