From the Lab

Everyday we make thousands of decisions (35,000 to be exact).

Most of these decisions affect our health. We actually make 226.7 decisions a day about what food to eat or not eat.*

That’s why our health never stays the same - it’s all based on the latest decision. Did we give ourselves fuel or junk food, did we get stronger or skip the workout, did we go to sleep before 11pm or keep Netflix going all night.

But it’s not just sleep, exercise and nutrition - it’s also how we spend our time.

I recently attended a presentation by venture capital investor, Chris Fralic.

Chris is the quintessential networker - he’s got 150,000 followers on LinkedIn and teaches classes on how to build stronger relationships.

While the context of the talk was to help founders - the message applies to everyone:

Just like every food decision affects our health - every single interaction we have with others affects our personal brand.

The point here isn’t that we should be so worried about our “own brand.” The point is that each of these interactions creates an emotional response - both for the other person and for ourselves.

It’s so easy to race through our day and shoot out emails to people we know for things we need or to ignore people as we get through our own To Do list.

But if we’re always “asking” and not taking the time to “give” or if we aren’t taking a beat to have a little bit of empathy, to ask a question, to think about what they need - then is it a relationship or a transaction?

Is it sustainable or will that relationship slowly erode over time?

This is even true of people we don’t know, but run into at the coffee shop, in the Uber, waiting at the school to pick up the kids.

We can decide to go out of our way to smile, to give a friendly hello, to engage. Or - we can avoid the interaction, stare down at our phone and give a barely noticeable nod.

I’m totally guilty here. But it’s crazy - these are missed opportunities.

Imagine having just 2-3, heck even 1 more positive interaction every day. Just think about how much that would improve our mindset - and the difference it would have on the other person.

As a bonus - yes, it would also improve our personal brand and deepen our relationships.

Every morning we wake up with a chance to improve our health and we have the opportunity to make an impact on others - what are you going to decide?

*Not sure how the research was so precise to get “226.7” food decisions - but that’s what they say

Health & Longevity in the News

Challenges with Medicare: Selecting your health insurance is a struggle no matter the age, lifestyle or health condition. But it’s especially challenging as a senior. Enrollment is now open through 12/7 - avoid these pitfalls. (WSJ)

Can Golden Retrievers Live Longer?: As someone who grew up with these amazing dogs - some of my most painful memories were when each of them passed away before reaching 10 (so they didn’t even make to 70 I guess). Well, now there’s a gene that might unlock their longevity and maybe has implications to help cancer in humans. (UC Davis)

No More Petrochemicals!: Multiple public and private institutions are in search of naturally occurring enzymes to replace industrialized ones. Why? Industrialized processes use heavy metals and create toxic ramifications for us and the environment. Biocatalysis is the name of the game, and will create a cleaner, more sustainable approach. (Big Think)

Tuesday QR | Healing Turmeric Tonic

Discover the ultimate 5-minute healing tea tonic boasting health-packed ginger, lemon, and turmeric, spiced with cayenne. This quick detox solution not only aids in cold recovery but also serves as a calming pre-sleep relaxant.

Pro tip: Experiment with this recipe to see what taste works for you - the sweetener isn’t necessary, but give honey, allulose or monk fruit a go if you’d like. Also, you can swap in freshly cracked black pepper as an alternative to cayenne pepper.
