  • Question: Kids & Parents

Behind every young child who believes in themselves is a parent who believed first.

We’re all learning and trying to do our best. This is the % of parents that say if they knew more positive parenting strategies they would use them. (ZeroToThree.org)

This Week

This week we discussed the demanding, yet rewarding act of parenting.

Issue #196 - parenting is conflicted; it’s hard but rewarding; it goes by fast and agonizingly slow; it’s full of love…and frustration. Stay on the positive side - change your perspective, let it go and make them proud

Issue #197 - don’t raise your kids as adults. Give them space, let them tackle challenges and feel those emotions. It makes your job harder, but it’s better in the long run

BONUS: If we spend 75% of our time with our kids by the time they’re 12, then imagine what little time we have left with our own parents. Go celebrate mom and dad!

Inspiration | Great Reads for Dad

In honor of you amazing dads out there (and you moms looking for gift ideas for us great guys), here’s a list of some of the best reads we’ve come across that should be on everyone’s list:

“Make this book a part of your morning routine.” - Matthew McConaughey. High praise from someone who greatly values their time (see his own book “Greenlights”).

Kids spend 90% of their time indoors - mostly on screens and social media.

This book, from the host of the Netflix Series, MeatEater, is a call for parenting tough, curious, and competent kids who feel at home in the outdoors.

“I want my kids to know that they’re at an eye-to-eye level with nature. They are not terribly removed from it. They’re a component of it. Their actions have impact on it. And they have to have a relationship where it’s an interactive, hands-on, very responsible relationship.”

It’s amazing how much the entire temperament of kids (all of us) change when we get outside - to me, the more time outside the house the better!

Ok - we cheated a little bit with this one.

It’s not really a book, but a series of prompts to write letters to your dad. Sometimes we just need a nudge to write the letter. Great to share with your dad (or mom) and also to give to your kids to share with you.

My wife probably wouldn’t call me the world’s greatest “handyman” (although I like to think I’ve had my share of accomplishments since becoming a homeowner - replacing a toilet and garbage disposal).

This book is for the dad to get a boost of creativity and inspiration. From author Adam Savage (Mythbusters), this is a complete how-to guide to get away from the computer and to actually use our hands and build something.

As inspiration from our weekly Bucket List, here’s an older book (maybe double check on any specifics like restaurants/festivals) that stands the test of time with an incredible list of places to explore.

Sometimes I want to just daydream of getting away, Whether you’ve got kids in tow or looking for time away as a couple, this book not only gives you the initial idea - but 600 photos so that you can see it before you go.

Tom Coyne is accustomed to golfing…and walking. He made a splash with A Course Called Ireland as he played every course along the Irish coast…and used his legs, instead of a car, to trek between each course. In this book, he spends a year playing at 200+ different courses across America to find the Great American Golf Course. This time he only walked when he played.

BONUS: Don’t forget these books to optimize your physical/mental health:

  • Outlive (Peter Attia) - a guide to optimize your longevity (Issue #168

  • Breathe (James Nestor) - to understand the power of our breath for fitness and overall health (Issue #138)

  • The Good Life (Robert Waldinger & Marc Shulz) to focus on your relationships to live a happier, more fulfilled life (Issue #128)

Bucket List | Greenville, SC

In the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, sits a town of 70,000 called Greenville. There are 31 states with cities of the same name, so why this Greenville? Wonderful southern charm, deep arts community, and a bevy of green and blue spaces across a picturesque landscape. Not convinced? How about a diverse, world-class food community.
