‘I saw running as a privilege that not everyone has,’ he continues. ‘I want to use that privilege of mine when there are people out there who can’t walk, let alone run. It fuels this thing in you, and you get out there and get it done – there are no excuses.’
— Hellah Sidibe (see Inspiration)

Inspiration | Hellah Sidibe

Hellah Sidibe

So after reading the Stat of the Day it might not seem like much, but Hellah Sidibe has been running for over 2,100 straight days (nearly 6 years).

He was like the rest of us - he said he would go to the gym, but would end up not going. After being dropped from Major League Soccer (MLS) over visa issues, Hellah needed an outlet for his anger & depression.

He decided that he needed some little wins (micro-commitments) - so it started out as a 10 min run every day. That turned into a daily routine with two rules: 1) run outside; 2) at least 2 miles.

Such a humble beginning turned into running the Life Time Leadville Trail 100 run in Colorado, and then an 84-day quest running 3,061 miles across the U.S - averaging 36 miles a day across 14 states.

That journey - which raised funds for the incredible organization Soles4Souls - included police questioning, racial slurs, and even direct threats. Even on his daily runs, he says as a black man he needs to really make sure he looks like a “runner” to avoid unfortunate encounters.

We as a society need to do better.

Fortunately, Hellah said there were also “beautiful” moments of strangers offering him food and water, and even joining him on a run.

Hellah’s quest now inspires hundreds of thousands of others - his YouTube channel “HellahGood” of 314 videos has nearly 300,000 subscribers.

Maybe the best message is that this isn’t about breaking records - but being true to yourself.

“I give myself permission to quit every day. There’s no pressure to continue and keep it up.”
