Imagine you’re Superman, and someone has sprinkled kryptonite everywhere on Earth. This is quite literally happening with heavy metals.

From the Lab

One of the most hidden dangers to our health - heavy metals. We all have lead, cadmium, and mercury in our body.

How does this happen?

Lead comes from drinking contaminated water (check your municipal water quality), breathing in toxic fumes, or eating food with lead that was in the soil.

A study from the EDF showed that lead is in a lot of our food (even 27% of tested baby foods). This can impact our heart, kidneys, and nervous system. (NIH)

Cadmium is considered a cancer-causing agent and can also lead to kidney disease. It’s also in our food - a few months ago we shared how lead and cadmium is most likely in our favorite dark chocolate (that we all have been told is healthy).

Mercury comes from fish - especially big fish at the top of the food chain (eat SMASH fish instead - Salmon, Mackerel, Anchovies, Sardines, Herring).* It’s also from dental fillings.

* For the record, my wife bought canned sardines over a year ago and it’s still in our cabinet

So what do we do about these damn metals in our body?

Chlorella

This green algae has been shown to bind with these metals to kick them out of our body and prevent them from building up in our organs.

It’s also loaded with vitamins (more nutrient dense than spinach or broccoli), plus pound for pound is more protein-dense than soybeans. Studies also suggest that it lowers blood pressure, cholesterol and fasting blood glucose levels.

There’s a growing body of research to suggest chlorella should be a staple in our diet.

But even if you don’t take this everyday - it’s good to take with food you think might contain some of these metals (fish, chocolate) or just cycle through it every few weeks to give your body a reset. Just take the recommended dose (I suggest the tablets) for a week or so and then maybe cycle off for a few weeks.

NOTE: Anything that detoxes your body when you’ve got crap inside might make you feel bad while it gets the poison out. But if you have severe digestion issues, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms or are currently taking any medications, always consult with a medical pro that you trust

Health & Longevity in the News

High-Protein Foods for Hiking: As discussed in Issues #111-115, proteins are vitally important. If you don’t have enough protein, then your body could break down muscle tissue. If you’re active, you should ingest even more. (Outside)

What Time of Day to Workout: Don’t know yet, but if we’re to believe mice, it all hinges on your circadian rhythm (go figure). This study has no real outcome, other than to be a baseline for future studies. However, test it out - try working out at different times of day to see what works best for you (it might not be 6a). (Levels)

Midlife Brain Fog: It’s a real thing for all of us, but especially for women in perimenopause. Lots of hormone changes are the cause, and it tends to get better when you reach menopause. The positives - your overall cognitive performance remains normal, and you can reduce these challenges with exercise and a healthy diet. (WSJ)

Thursday Night In | CA Burrito Bowl

I’m heading to San Diego today and in honor of Southern California we’ve got a healthy version of the burrito bowl with potatoes. Simple and healthy - I could eat this every day!
