You are not powerless - unless the mitochondria that pumps up energy in billions of cells living along with you decides to stop working. Don’t give up on yourself before that happens.

The number of mitochondria in each of our cells. Remember a cell is only 20-30 microns and a micron is 0.000039 inches. So those mitochondria are pretty tiny - but powerful. (Source)

From the Lab

Back in September 2022 we covered the top Core Supplements - the key supplements that most of us don’t get enough of in our diet and should consider taking on a daily basis:

Ready to further up your longevity game? This week we’ve got a few more supplements to check out (or NOT check out) that might help take your health to the next level.

REMEMBER: Supplements should be the last place you look for benefits, not first. The priority should be Mindset, Nutrition, Movement, Sleep, Relationships - all of that should be in order before looking at spending money on more supplements.

Today we’re starting with how to massively improve our strength and brain health:

Urolithin A

Our mitochondria power our energy by converting fuel (food & oxygen) into ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

As we age, these mitochondria get stressed - bad food, too much food, smoking, toxins, etc. - and they stop working properly.

It appears that Urolithin A can eliminate and recycle these poor performing mitochondria (mitophagy). Studies show that this compound can increase muscle strength (in this case by 12% for 40-64 yr olds) with no known side effects.

Most people aren’t able to metabolize this compound from food like pomegranates so a supplement is the way to go (see Mitopure supplement in Product Recs below). That’s why it’s garnered increased attention from experts like Dr. Mark Hyman.

Health & Longevity in the News

Bacteria at 26,000’: You find the same germs on Mt. Everest that you would in your toddler’s Kleenex. DNA from bacteria Streptococcus and Staphylococcus is dormant but alive, frozen in ice and rocks. That means bacteria could survive on frozen planets - hmmm. (Outside)

Brackets Busted: Princeton, Furman and Fairleigh Dickinson helped destroy 99.9% of brackets going into the weekend. Should we still call it a Cinderella story in 2023 given how often these upsets happen? (NCAA)

The Conundrum of Time: Time is a paradox, even more so, or so it seems, since COVID (and we’re not even touching spacetime 🌌). Researchers long assumed the brain controls our sense of time, but new evidence suggests our heart has something to say about it. (NYTimes)

Monday Q | Trust

Given that what we eat is one of the top factors of our health & longevity - how do you decide what supplements are safe and right for you?
