  • Monday Q: How Much Money Do You Need?

The life of money-making is one undertaken under compulsion and wealth is evidently not the good we are seeking; for it is merely useful and for the sake of something else.
— Aristotle

Those who are confident in their ability to manage money intelligently score nearly twice as high in overall well-being (Thriving Wallet Study).

From the Lab

Do you wake up and just think “wow I’m lucky to go to work today?”*

I hope so. But, according to Gallup, 60% of us are detached from our work and nearly 20% are downright miserable.

*When I say "go" to work, in the world of remote work I understand this might mean simply flipping on your laptop at home.

So why do we do it? Why continue to show up at a job that does nothing more than provide a paycheck - and also take you away from your kid’s soccer game, eliminate any chance to actually fit in a bike ride, or spend a random Tuesday all day with your partner?

I mean, money doesn’t buy happiness, right?

A famous happiness study said that money does matter if you aren’t meeting your basic needs. At the time (2010), this benchmark was $75,000 a year.

The conclusion of the study was that “more money doesn’t necessarily buy more happiness, but less money is associated with emotional pain.”

What’s happened is that we’ve all come to define our own version of $75,000. Once we set into a lifestyle (having a nanny, belonging to the country club, sending our kids to private school, expecting annual ski vacations), then anything that prevents us from continuing to live at these standards creates mental anxiety.

That’s why money is the #1 cause of stress - even for those of us fortunate that we’re not worried about where we’re going to get our next meal.

As a guy who actually made the switch from a well-paying job to starting a business that is definitely not paying the bills, I’ll tell you right now - money matters

I’ve struggled with questioning my self-worth if I can’t provide for my family or if I’ll ever be able to afford to live in the best neighborhoods or vacation at 5-star resorts around the world.

That's why I think that despite us all "knowing" more money isn't always better, until we actually make a real agreement with ourselves (and partners), money will always be holding us back from living our best life - and not the way we think.

So this week we're going to talk about how to reframe money - all in an effort to help us live longer, better, and smarter.
