Your body needs 20 different kinds of amino acids to function properly. These break down into 9 essential (our body can't produce these on its own) and 11 non-essential amino acids. (Cleveland Clinic

Confused when it comes to protein?

If you’ve done any online research you’re going to find respected “experts” who tell you that too much protein is inherently bad for longevity - see David Sinclair:

…and others who tout protein as the key to living a longer, healthier life, see Dr. Gabrielle Lyon

Protein has become a political/religious debate among nutritionists, doctors, environmentalists, and biohackers. You have to pick a side and there’s no room for nuance or debate.

You can make a lot more money going crazy on one side of the argument than trying to actually explain the real story about protein (see the $100M fortune of the Liver King before being outed for taking steroids).

Well we’re going to try to make sense of it all - even if it’s not going to make us Instagram famous.

First - protein is essential for life. It builds and repairs every cell in our body. And yes - it’s the driver of skeletal muscle growth through the process of protein growth synthesis (Issue #63) - which is why you should consume protein after you lift.

Second - your genetics, your hormones, your gut microbiome, your activity level, and your stress levels all influence the perfect diet for you. So don’t assume that what you read online will be best.

This week, we’re going to answer the following questions for you:

  1. Should you eat a lot of protein or a little?

  2. Do you need to eat animal protein or can you get enough from plants?

  3. What’s the deal with the new “fake” meat companies?

Health & Longevity in the News

Interested in a Green Comet?: Then look up. Between now and Feb 2, comet C/2022 E3 (Z.T.F.) - just rolls off the tongue - will be visible by looking to the north between the Big Dipper and Polaris (North Star) in the northern hemisphere. Depending on light pollution near you, you may need binoculars or a telescope. Why green? Diatomic carbon in the comet is reacting with the sun’s UV radiation. (NYTimes)

So What About Those Gas Stoves: It’s all over the news, but what are the health impacts, and what can you do about it? It’s expensive to replace your gas stove - so until you do, the #1 thing you can do is always have your vent on at full blast, even when boiling water. (Scientific American)

Fight Jet Lag: Do you travel a lot and/or across several time zones? Do you want a million miles so you can travel more? Check out this contest from United and Chase, and the Timeshifter app (focused on jet lag). (Learn more)
