Issue #110: The Comeback of Former World #1

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 20th. Why does the US have 10+ "days" for every day? Who's lobbying for this?

Today is a chance to celebrate National Charlie, Claudia, Judy or Sebastian Days (that's 4 names that get a day?), Penguin Day + Penguin Awareness Day, Coffee Break Day, Cheese Lover's Day, Camcorder Day (why not, 9 so far), and my favorite, National DJ Day - props to Mark Ronson and Zedd.

Wait, it's National Max Day tomorrow - ok, never mind, we're in!

Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds. Discard them and their value will never be known. Improve them and they will become the brightest gems in a useful life.

Number of men's tennis players ranked #1 in the world from 2004-2020. Roger Federer (310 weeks), Novak Djokovic (282 weeks), Rafael Nadal (209 weeks), and Andy Murray (41 weeks). No better example of excellence and mental toughness than these guys. (Wikipedia)

Inspiration

Andy Andy!

I'll admit - I've always been a Federer fan, but Andy Murray has the heart of a lion

Back in 2005, Murray turned pro as a 17-yr old. Within two years he cracked the Top 10 (world ranking) and just a year later would take down Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals of the US Open (before losing to Federer).

His success culminated in 2013, when he became the first Brit since 1936 to win his home tournament at Wimbledon.

But just two months later he had his first surgery - this one for his back.

After a lengthy rehab - Murray worked his way back to win Wimbledon again in 2016 and then took home Olympic Gold in Rio on his way to becoming the #1 player in the world.

As fate would have it - just a few months later (Jan 2018) he had the first of two hip surgeries. Many - including himself - thought retirement was inevitable.

Undeterred, 7 months after playing with a metal hip, Murray won the European Open.

Ah - not again! The next two years included a pelvic injury (7 months off), COVID-19 (can't play in 2021 Aussie Open), groin injury (3 months off), and a quad strain.

What 34-yr old comes back from all that? Well - Andy Murray.

He just finished an epic 5 hour 45 min match that finished after 4am local time in Melbourne. Down 2 sets - Murray made the biggest comeback of his career to advance to the Third Round at the 2023 Aussie Open.

The point that illustrates Murray's entire career - he just won't give up:

Whenever you might think the deck is stacked against you - know that you've got all the heart, the grit, the talent to keep going!

Brain Games

#1: 2-min Break

I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with wind. What am I?

Why: Sharpen your logic and reasoning skills

#2: 10-min of Focus - Speaking of New Habits

Seek novelty. Say yes to something this weekend you’ve never done or haven’t done in a while. It can be simple - go to that new restaurant or try a dish you never have before, drive down a new road, go to a museum, walk somewhere different, say “Yes” to your children all weekend.

Why: Novel activity > triggers dopamine > creates a higher motivational state > fuels engagement and primes neurons > enables neurogenesis + increase synaptic plasticity (increase in new neural connections, or learning)

Thanks for another great week!

In honor of the comeback from Sir Andy Murray - enjoy the weekend everyone!
