Issue #95: The Blueprint for 2023 Goals

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 30th. Two of the world's most famous athletes are celebrating birthdays today - Tiger Woods (47) and LeBron James (38). Both continue to reinvent themselves as they enter the next phase of their life & career. LeBron just continues to be one of the best basketball players on the planet. Just shows what's possible when you take care of your body - age is just a number.

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.

My own made up "500" club. Despite feeling like I didn't work out enough between family and work obligations, I took 102 HIIT classes and ran 418 miles in 2022. Plus, somewhere between 10-15 miles swimming (didn't track my trips to the pool). Training for some triathlon races in 2023 so this number should be way higher!

Inspiration

A real-life story from Leadership Coach, Brian Alvo, on how even simple goals can be life changing and affect our identity.

  • In a leadership training series in 2021, I had a participant (we'll call him ‘Oscar’) who never learned how to swim. His whole life, he avoided it and came up with reasons/excuses for not learning. It weighed on him heavily, especially as a father in his early 40s whose kids were learning to swim. During our trainings, he set a new goal: Learn how to swim one lap with confidence.

  • While this goal may seem trivial to the average swimmer, the reality is it was a deeply personal goal for Oscar. It appeared to be filled with regret, insecurity, fear, and shame. He avoided it all his life but no longer wanted to.

  • Oscar started with a half-lap. Then a lap. Then two laps. Then four laps. Over the course of three months, with deliberate practice, swim lessons, and commitment, Oscar could swim for 30-45 minutes at a time. He felt lighter, more fulfilled, and more confident. He had conquered a lifelong fear and narrative. He was no longer the person who couldn't swim...he used to be the person who couldn't swim.

One key takeaway: Oscar's process to navigate this goal, the motivation, and the narrative could serve as a guidepost and be reapplied toward his future goals. Whether it is work, family, or a self-fulfilling goal, having a process that aligns and resonates with you is key - as Oscar found his through deliberate practice, support, and commitment.

Growth, development, and service have been the cornerstone of Brian’s career path. He began his career with the United States Marine Corps and moved on to build a non-profit in Nicaragua. After returning to the US, he earned his MBA from Duke University and helped teams and companies in the healthcare and startup communities.

NextGen Center is the sum of these experiences and focuses on helping high-growth companies and teams navigate their challenges more effectively so they can unlock their true growth potential. Reach out to team@thrive25.com or Brian directly to learn more.

Brain Games

2-min Break

George, William, John, Abe, and Millard have their birthdays on consecutive days of a single week, all between Monday and Friday.

  • George’s birthday is as many days before Millard’s and William’s is after Abe’s

  • John is two days older than Abe

  • Millard’s birthday is on Thursday

Can you figure out whose birthday is on each day?

Why: sharpen your logic and reasoning skills

5-min of Focus

Shower with your eyes closed. Try using just your tactile senses (but use common sense to avoid burn or injury). Locate the taps solely by feel, and adjust the temperature. Then wash your hair and body with your eyes shut. Your hands will probably notice varied textures of your own body that you don’t “see” and will send messages back to your brain.

Why: increase overall spatial awareness and heighten your other senses to "see" for you

Happy New Year from Thrive25 -  we'll see you in 2023!!

** Brain Games Answer **

Answer

  • Monday = John

  • Tuesday = George

  • Wednesday = Abe

  • Thursday = Millard

  • Friday = William
