Issue #91: Is Aluminum Actually Bad?

Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 22nd. We're enjoying the holiday with our families - so we'll be back with you next Tuesday (12/27). Whatever you celebrate, make sure to take the time to step away and enjoy friends and family - thank you for your continued support of Thrive25!

Common sense is like deodorant. The people who need it most never use it.

From the Lab

Read any medical journal or website and it will say “Claims linking breast cancer and deodorants do not have a solid scientific grounding, and...only people with extremely weak kidney functions worry about the health risks of using antiperspirants.”

Good to go, right? 🤷‍♀️

First - the difference between a deodorant and antiperspirant:

Deodorant targets bacteria that make us smell, but don’t stop us from sweating.

Antiperspirant contains ingredients (normally aluminum) to prevent our glands from releasing sweat.

It’s true - there are few clinical studies that verify the hazards of traditional deodorants or antiperspirants.

But here’s the thing - parabens (in most deodorant products) are chemicals that may disrupt fertility and all of our hormones (at least 1 in 10 men and women have infertility problems today - I’m sure some of you reading this know all about IVF).

And…we know aluminum in high levels is toxic.

Maybe it’s just a coincidence that over 50% of all breast cancer is located by the armpit. But even if that's true, we are supposed to sweat!

It’s a way our body detoxes itself - ever smell yourself when you workout after a night of drinking? Oh - and it’s the aluminum that causes those pit stains on our shirt - not our sweat!

So I’d say - why risk it? Find a natural, chemical/aluminum-free deodorant that your partner can live with (I currently go with Every Man Jack, but our Guest Writer might have something to say about that).

Oh, and maybe bring an extra shirt to the office in the summer - it's just practical.

Living a Life of Intentionality

In many walks of life, we grab the bull by the horns. We do what we want and we do it with passionate intent. We run, lift, eat healthy (ish), work hard, care for our families, hang out with buddies, watch games, go to shows, read, etc. But in other areas of life, we cruise on autopilot. That’s what happens with our skincare, personal care, and feeling your best day after day.

I struggled with acne and skin issues for nearly 20 years. As an athlete growing up, I tried everything. Nothing worked. I strolled more aisles at my local drug and grocery stores than I'd care to recount. My skin issues persisted throughout my collegiate football days and into my mid-20s. This wasn’t just affecting my confidence, it was affecting my life.

I was living in Chicago and working for an investment firm when my boss told me in-passing without a second-thought: 'you need to do something about this [this, meaning my acne] or else we can't take you to meetings.' Ouch. For the longest time, I was always wondering if people were seeing me as a respected peer. A colleague. Or were they simply looking at my skin. This proved the latter.

We neglect. We deduce: ‘meh, I’m fine.’ But it’s time to live a life of comprehensive intentionality. Just like the other pillars of health, what we put on our face, hair, and body matters. Take it from the guy who, at 25 and living on Huron Street in Chicago, was told that his skin was prohibiting him from professional development.

Whether you have a Board meeting today or taking out your partner to a romantic dinner tonight, you deserve to have an extra pep in your step.

Matt Mullenax is a fellow Ohioan and Founder/CEO of Huron Personal Care Products. Whether you’re dealing (or have dealt) with certain grooming and/or personal care issues, or are just wanting to look and feel your best, Huron is for you. We deserve to feel great about how we show up to the world each day.
