Issue #82: Immunity Insights

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 9th. We covered a lot the past few weeks - with Mediation, Family Connection, Fasting, and now Immunity (see Archive).

Got a question or comment - we'd love to hear from you! Email us at team@thrive25.com.

Before we get started, some inspiration from our community. 9 months ago, Thrive25 subscriber Jeff M.'s sister was diagnosed with colon cancer at just 41 (way too soon). But she's beat the odds and will have her last chemo treatment next week. She's been fortunate - positive mindset, family support and great health insurance, but others are not. Consider donating to the Leonard Cancer Institute patient assistance fund to help others that need some extra support. Thanks for sharing the positive news Jeff!!

The press is our immune system. If it overreacts to everything, we eventually get sicker.

Our metabolism rate goes up 10% for every 2 degrees of body temp. So when we get a fever to crush our invader - take it easy on the exercise and eating. You need all the energy you can get.

BONUS FUN FACT: Ever a time when your partner got sick and you didn’t? We all have a slightly different immune system that is more or less effective at different invaders. This makes sense because back when we lived in 80-100 person tribes, you wouldn’t want a single virus to wipe out the entire group.

What’s really interesting is that we're actually attracted to partners with a different immune system from our own. Something to do with subconscious pheromones (i.e. smell). No - I don’t know how this works, but it’s pretty cool.

Inspiration

The White House recently held a Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health. We wanted to get the inside scoop and we’re so fortunate to get a first hand account from Mohammed Iqbal, one of the industry leaders who participated in the Conference.

Mohammed is a powerhouse in the wellness sector. He currently serves as Founder & CEO of SweatWorks, a creative digital agency in the fitness industry with over 100 team members and 7 global office locations. Here’s his first hand account:

I was honored to be invited to the first The White House Conference on Food, Nutrition and Health in 50 years.

The goal of the conference is to - “End Hunger and increase healthy eating and physical activity by 2030, so that fewer Americans experience diet-related diseases like diabetes, obesity, and hypertension.

Like many of us, I’m often frustrated by the government regulations on most health & wellness standards and the incredibly slow pace of progress. But this event seemed different. There was an aura of optimism and I felt we might actually get something done - it wasn’t going to be just another government PR event.

Back in 1969, President Richard Nixon held a similar conference to “put an end to hunger in America for all time” and to improve the nutritional well-being of all Americans.

In many ways it worked.

That event resulted in the landmark legislation, including:

  • The 1974 Food Stamp Act

  • The 1975 School Breakfast Program and Summer Food Program

  • Authorization for the Supplemental Feeding Program for Woman, Infants and Children (WIC)

  • Improvements to food and ingredient labeling

These programs have been essential to providing food for millions of children and families.

Yet, today 1 in 8 kids still go hungry (Feeding America) and we continue to grapple with chronic disease and obesity at unprecedented levels.

But this conference showed me what’s possible when private and public leaders come together determined to create positive change. I think we can create an impact even larger than the original conference 50 years ago.

What’s crazy - we’re already seeing changes being implemented in just a matter of weeks! For example, what constitutes a healthy cereal.

“Special K” - not so special. It’s one of 7 cereals the FDA no longer classifies as healthy under the new guidance of: 3/4 ounces of whole grains and no more than 1 gram of saturated fat, 230 mg of sodium and 2.5 grams of added sugars (this last point on added sugar is huge).

The other “not so healthy” cereals:

  • Raisin Bran (9g of added sugars)

  • Honey Nut Cheerios (12g of added sugars)

  • Corn Flakes (300 mg of sodium; 4g of added sugars)

  • Honey Bunches of Oats, Honey Roasted (8g of added sugars)

  • Frosted Mini Wheats (12g of added sugars)

  • Life (8g of added sugars)

It might not seem like much - but this will change how manufacturers create new products, especially those aimed at kids.

When it comes to nutrition, we still have a long way to go. However, this is progress and I for one will take it. Let’s keep it going!

Brain Games

#1: 2-min Break

There are 2 ducks in front of 2 other ducks. There are 2 ducks behind 2 other ducks. There are 2 ducks beside 2 other ducks. How many ducks are there?

Why: Spatial reasoning

#2: 4-min Exercise

Brush your teeth holding your tooth brush in your non-dominant hand (or the opposite you typically use). Getting cocky - try using your computer mouse with the opposite hand.

Why: Using the opposite side of your brain will support your brain's neural connections and even develop new ones. Consider doing this exercise more frequently - even splitting 50-50 between hands.

You know how they say shoot your age in golf? Well Phil Collins took that to another level - he turned 71 this year and still made $70M for his 2022 concert tour (#2 tour for all artists - behind Bad Bunny). Enjoy this classic to head into the weekend!

Thanks for another great week!

#1: 4 ducks in a square formation
