Issue #72: The 9 Rules for Thanksgiving

Good morning. It's Wednesday, November 23rd. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving - what are you most thankful for?

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.

The growth in weight of the average turkey from 16.83 lbs in 1960 to 30 lbs today. This is thanks mainly to artificial insemination - spreading the genes of breeder toms (50-70 lb birds) through selective breeding. (WSJ)

9 Ways to Celebrate Thanksgiving Thrive25-Style

#1: There are No Rules. Don’t let any of these ideas stop you from having the best day ever - including eating whatever you want or doing whatever you want.

#2: Get Moving. Start the day with a Turkey Trot or get out there and toss the pigskin. Gets the metabolism going to really enjoy that meal, plus some AM sunlight in your eyes.*

#3: Hydrate. Get in at least 8-10 cups of water. This will keep all systems operating properly and maybe send you a little signal you’re actually full - just means more leftovers so that turkey sandwich on Friday will taste even better.

#4: No Regrets. Go enjoy everything on the table and don’t look back - if you have 2 desserts, don't keep thinking about it.

#5: Superfoods. Include some superfoods on the menu. Get a helping of sweet potatoes (maybe skip the marshmallow because let’s be honest, that’s not food - recipe), green beans w/ almonds (don’t overcook - crisp is delish), and some Brussels Sprouts (don’t let grandma boil them).

#6: Food Swap. Feel free to include some “safe” healthy swaps. Apple pie can be an Apple Crisp or try a low sugar version of Pumpkin Pie (no one will ever know).

#7: Food Swap Part 2. Avoid a mutiny by getting a thumbs-up from the crowd before going with crazy swaps like: mashed potatoes becoming mashed cauliflower or stuffing becoming Stuffins (this is apparently a real thing - combines stuffing, rolls together).

#8: Keep Moving. Go for a post-dinner walk (if you're going to eat like crazy, at least walk it off, right?). Two feet of snow outside? Cold is good for you, but forget your gloves at home - maybe a wild game of charades or family dance party?

#9: Laugh. Laugh more than 10 times (it’s the best medicine and we only get together with some friends & family a few times a year - see #1).

BONUS: Hit the sheets and wake up as usual during the long weekend. Keeping the same sleep schedule will help your body recover and be ready for when reality hits on Monday.

Health & Longevity in the News

Where Do We Come From?: In Issue #53, we highlighted NASA’s search for life outside of Earth. But how, and where, did it all start here? First life required basic ingredients and some sort of “spark.” Likeliest starting points - hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean, shallow ponds harboring nitrogen oxides and phosphorus, or comet impacts that included all the needed amino acids (yes - like your protein shake). Go debate which theory you deem the most worthy at the Thanksgiving dinner table. (Big Think)

The Future is Here: "Nano-robot" antibodies created by a computer are being used to treat cancer patients. The goal is to have these antibodies more effectively identify if cells surrounding a tumor are good or bad and thus eliminate the cancer without the side effects. (Times of Israel)

Gift Guide Bonanza: Look we are all about minimalism (see Issue #27 - Remove the Clutter) and recommend experiences over "stuff." But you probably need to get a few gifts this year so get the stuff to make it easier to enjoy the outdoors and make those experiences more fun:

What We're Watching

We provided a sneak peek a few weeks back (Issue #51), but Limitless dropped on the National Geographic channel of Disney+ on Nov 16th. With episode names like Fasting, Strength, Memory and Acceptance, and throw in some adventure with amazing cinematography - we know you'll enjoy this series.
