Say you're 40 and your parents are 65 - if you spend 5 days with them every year until they are 90, you will only spend 0.8% of your remaining days with your parents. Even if you spend 5 days with your friends every year and you all live for 50 more years until you're 90, this is still only 1.7% of your life with them. From the Lab

Make Thanksgiving a holiday to help you live longer

Over 150 studies prove that our relationships impact how well and how long we live - the quality of our close connections is a better indicator of longevity than most vital signs taken during a physical.

Although it’s been my favorite holiday, for countless reasons Thanksgiving can breed massive stress - whether it’s traveling (w/ kids), hosting too many personalities, comparing your “success” with what others achieved this year, or just having to talk to that family member following Ye.

I’d say for most of us, while we look forward to Turkey Day, in the very back of our minds we’re thinking “ok get through the day and then we’ll be back to our normal routine."

But what if this was the last Thanksgiving you spent with these friends or family?

It’s definitely possible, right? No matter the traditions we all keep - as we’ve all seen recently, you never know what the future will bring.

So this year - even if it’s not where you want to be, even if someone is pissing you off, even if the turkey is dry - trade your expectation for appreciation (Tony Robbins).

Good relationships don’t have to be smooth all the time. Some [connections] could bicker with each other day in and day out, but as long as they felt that they could really count on the other when the going got tough, those arguments didn’t take a toll on their memories.
— Robert Waldinger, Harvard

Find a reason to appreciate the friends and family around the dinner table - your longevity depends on it!

Health & Longevity in the News

Fresh Off Last Week: According to Georgetown, a guided mindfulness-based stress reduction program was as effective as using ‘the gold-standard’ antidepressant drug - escitalopram - for patients with anxiety disorders. The problem - insurance covers the drug, not the meditation. (SGN). To learn more, check out the power of the mind (Issue #16) and last week’s focus on meditation (Issues# 65-69).

The Billionaires Who Want to Live Forever: Gstaad (where else) hosted the Longevity Investors Conference - a two-day event where 150 scientists, biotech founders, billionaires and scientist-biotech founder-billionaires discussed ways to not only delay death, but prolong life. With billions to invest, what is fact & fiction to help increase longevity? (Check out this first-hand account

Mercedes Gets Into Aging Game: Daimler created an exhibit to challenge age stereotypes. Visitors can choose between the "young" or "old" door to enter and once inside you can take tests to measure memory, balance, grip strength, and high jump. They even give you your biological age. “Many prejudices about aging are long out-of-date. Every age has potential... age diversity means diversity of experience, perspectives and new ideas.” (Read More - Reuters)
