Issue #59: Childhood Dreams

Good morning. It’s Friday, November 4th. On this day 35 years ago (1987) the NBA announced four expansion franchises: Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat, Minneapolis Timberwolves, and Orlando Magic. Oh and we've got a few more celebs that should be joining Thrive25 - Matthew McConaughey and Puff Daddy are both turning 52 today.

It’s almost impossible to maintain any kind of distance or any sense of social hierarchy when you’re just howling with laughter.

The number of no hitters in World Series history. The first happened in Game 5 in 1956 en route to the Yankees beating the Dodgers (Brooklyn at the time) in the series, 4 games to 3. Don Larsen of the Yankees pitched a perfect game, and his catcher, Yogi Berra, jumped in his arms in an iconic celebration. The second happened Wednesday (66 years later), as the Astros used 4 pitchers to blank the Phillies in Game 4. Riding that energy, the Astros won an instant classic on the road in Philly 3-2, to go up...3-2. Not much separates these clubs, but a Champion will be crowned this weekend.

Inspiration

It’s not about how to follow your dreams…it’s about how to live your life.

Randy Pausch (The Last Lecture)

Many of you have probably seen or at least heard about the last lecture of Prof Randy Pausch who presented his life's lessons after he was given 3-6 months to live with pancreatic cancer at the age of 46.

In just 1-2 min of watching Randy you’re instantly pulled into his positive energy. Somehow he manages more smiles and laughs in the hour-long lecture than most of us in an entire week.

What did he decide to talk about in what would be his last words to his students and colleagues - childhood dreams

He achieved most of these dreams (no he didn’t make it to the NFL) and talks about the resilience, hard work, and luck to make them happen.

But when you see him floating in the gravity-free NASA jet or working on Disney VR, you can’t help but see Randy’s unbounded passion and childish joy.

Randy made life fun

Having fun doesn’t mean quit your job, travel the world, ignore reality.

It means making your reality your dreams

We all want to live a full life for as long as possible (that’s one reason you’re here).

But for all of us time is finite.

Cherish it as your most valuable resource (because it is).

Halloween might be over - but go be a kid this weekend and have some fun!!

Friday Flex

This one is all about the core. It's a slow mountain climber on an exercise ball and then a rotation chop with a resistance band. Might not be a ton of sweat, but will definitely feel the abs.

Brain Games

Check out these games to sharpen your logic and reasoning skills.

2-min Break

#1: Ryan left home running. He ran a ways and then turned left, ran the same distance and turned left again, ran the same distance and turned left again. When he got home there were two masked men. Who were they?

5-min of Focus

#2: The United States, England, Iran, and Wales will be in Group B when the 2022 World Cup starts Nov 20. In a recent simulation, each team played each other once - for a total of six games.

  • England won more games than Wales

  • Iran lost more games than Wales

  • The United States tied England (this was the only tie in the group)

Who won the game between the United States and Wales?
