Issue #54: Your Limitless Brain

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 28th. The World Series starts tonight. If you're not from Houston or Philadelphia, pick your side (or forget we mentioned it).

Let's finish up this week on learning and get ready for Halloween!

Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.

  • Weekly Insights: Our Limitless Brain + the FASTER Method

  • Inspiration: Our Amazing Memory

  • Friday Flex: Moving Sideways

  • Brain Games: Red or Blue (we promise, it's not political)

Despite what you've heard, we don't use 10% of our brain...we use all of it.* It's just a matter of how well we use it.

*This is also why any brain injury often leads to mental or physical repercussions.

Weekly Insights

There’s no limit to your creativity, imagination, determination, ability to think, reason or learn. Trust me, Max and I are examples of that - who would have ever thought we’d be writing 50+ daily health & longevity newsletters!?!

Nothing special about us - just combined our passion, purpose, and energy to create something we want to share with the world.

We’re not talking about being Einstein, da Vinci, or even Jobs. It’s not about IQ (which is a flawed measure of intelligence).

We all have a form of genius in us:

  • Dynamo - incredible creativity/ideas (Lady Gaga)

  • Blaze - extraordinary ability to connect with people (Oprah)

  • Tempo - ability to see the big picture and stay the course (Tim Cook)

  • Steel - brilliant at seeing the little things that others miss (Billy Beane - Moneyball)*

*It's a good clip from the movie

Most of us are a combination - we have a little bit of each of these genius types, it’s just a matter of bringing it to life!

Ask yourself these questions as you consider how to tap into your genius:

  • What do you want to be?

  • What do you want to do?

  • What do you want to have?

  • What do you want to share?

Inspiration

Exceptional Memorizers are Made, not Born

At the age of sixty, John Basinger, embarked on the challenge to memorize Paradise Lost - a 60,000 word poem about Adam & Eve.

Now before you think John has some special photographic memory - he doesn’t. Clinical tests show his memory is about average. So how did he do it?

He started with just 7 lines a day - just a short 8 years later as he was closing in on age 70 John finished the entire poem.

It took him 3 full days to recite the whole thing.

Beyond being committed to finishing what he sets out to do, John studied theater at the National Theater for the Deaf (NTD) - no, he’s not deaf.

But after learning sign language, he noticed his memory improved when he made gestures for the words as he learned the poem.

This brought the words to life and deepened his memory of the lines. 20 years later as a youthful 90-yr old he still remembers the whole thing.

Moral of the story - our memory isn’t fixed at any age! (Full Story)

Which bowling ball doesn't belong?

Ball #4 - it has two large finger holes; the other balls only have one large hole. Did you focus more on the reflections of the pins on the balls than the finger holes?
