Stat of the Day

The percentage of points Roger Federer won across his career. He’s one of the best players of all time - 103 titles, 20 majors, 302 weeks as world #1. Yet, he barely won more than half the points he played.

Inspire

Lessons from Roger Federer

My all-time favorite tennis player, Roger Federer, recently shared his “tennis lessons” with the graduating class at Dartmouth.

Here are two takeaways that go beyond the court for all us to remember:

“It’s only a point.”

You can see from the Stat of the Day - Federer barely won more than half the points he played. And that that small difference was enough to win 82% of his matches.

A few thoughts for us to apply:

  • There’s no such thing as perfection - just constant learning

  • Every point (moment) is a huge deal - it deserves our focus and intensity with a clear focus. But we can’t do that if we’re still thinking about the previous point (moment)

  • Learn from the losses, but when it’s behind you - keep it there

  • Negative energy is wasted energy

“There are different definitions of talent”

I was among those that thought tennis just came naturally to Federer. He wasn’t the biggest hitter or the most athletic - he was like an artist on the court and barely seemed to be breaking a sweat - it was effortless. But that’s a myth.

It was exactly all the hard work and preparation that enabled him to have that confidence and ability once the match started. He refers to patience, trust in yourself, and loving the process.

These are all talents too - they all relate back to resilience. You know who’s going to win 54% of the time - the one who just keeps showing up.

I’ll tell you this - after writing 356 newsletters while building a company and product at the same time - most days feel like I lost almost half of the time.

But showing up, again and again, that’s why we’re still here. And that’s why we’re positioned to build a huge business that will change health & longevity for millions of people.

*Not sure if he’s 100% honest in his speech - he talks about vacuuming the house since “graduating” from tennis. I get he might be driving his kids to school and playing online chess, but vacuuming? I guess here’s to staying grounded.

I caught Scott Galloway as a guest on this pod hosted by Ryan Hawk.

Ryan lost on being QB1 at Miami University - but turns out that was because he was competing with future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger.

Scott and Ryan go deep into resilience - how sales and life are the same as tennis.

You live in a world of rejection, but that’s ok. Because if you bat .300 you’re an all-star, if you start 4 companies, but only one succeeds that’s good enough. The people that get the most out of life are the ones who put themselves out there and aren’t afraid of others or the world telling them no.

Max’s Meal Plan

Looking for a meal plan for next week that’s ready for summer? Check out these ideas…

Sunday: Spicy Shrimp Tacos with Avocado Crema

  • My palate has evolved a lot the last 10 years, so I wouldn’t call these tacos super spicy - just the right amount of heat

  • This makes a lot, A LOT, of avocado crema. We actually ended up skipping the vinaigrette in Wednesday’s dish

Monday: Blueberry Chicken Chopped Salad

  • A superfood dream salad. We touched on blueberries last Thursday - this is an opportunity to have them alone or in something other than a smoothie!

Tuesday: Seared Salmon Ceasar Salad

  • Our Seared Salmon Ceasar Salad doesn’t really have a recipe - sear the salmon (seasoned with salt and pepper) on the stovetop with olive oil. Then mix with your favorite ingredients - greens, tomato, avocado, parmesan cheese and/or whatever else. Dressing? Caesar or maybe that avocado crema!

Wednesday: Summer Chipotle Chicken Cobb Salad

  • I had been thinking about this salad since last August. It’s got my favorite ABCs - avocado, bacon and corn + strawberries all mixed with some delicious chicken thighs

  • As mentioned, we went with Sunday’s avocado crema instead of the vinaigrette - you can’t go wrong with either option

Thursday: Cilantro Lime Chicken Thighs + Cilantro Rice

  • This is by far our favorite chicken thigh recipe. Pair it with whatever you like, we went double-cilantro this week with the rice

  • Marinade the chicken overnight. You won’t be disappointed

Bonus: Guacamole

  • Yes, Ryan and I eat too many tortilla chips, but it’s because guacamole is so damn good

Two quick brain teasers for you:

1) A woman is pushing her car along a road when she comes to a hotel. She shouts, "I'm bankrupt!" Why?

2) You have two ropes. Each rope takes exactly one hour to burn from one end to the other, and they burn at consistent rates. With these ropes and a way to light them, how can you measure exactly 45 minutes?

** Brain Games Answer **

1) She’s playing Monopoly! In the game, if you land on a property you cannot afford and owe rent to another player, you may declare bankruptcy.

2) Burning Rope

  • Light the first rope at both ends and one end of the second rope simultaneously. Because the first rope is burning at both ends, it will take 30 minutes to completely burn out.

  • When the first rope is completely burned out (after 30 minutes), light the other end of the second rope. At this point, the second rope has been burning for 30 minutes and has 30 minutes of burn time left. Lighting the other end of the second rope will make it burn out in half the time, which is 15 minutes.
