Focus

Ikigai

No conversation about Okinawa would be complete without talking about ikigai.

Well that and karate which was also invented in Okinawa.

Ikigai literally translates into “life’s worth.” It’s what gives meaning to what we do. It’s why we get out of bed in the morning and the purpose for how we live.

But it’s not some empty slogan you put on your wall to “follow your passion” without a worry about making money or working a real job.

It’s taking into account the reality of your life today.

But this is where most articles about ikigai stop. Leaving you thinking - how the hell am I going to find a job that does all of these things??

Instead, the deeper understanding of how Okinawans use this is to NOT chase happiness, but instead chase mastery.

They have a concept of chanto suru - which translates into “things should be done properly.”

When you do something as well as you possibly can it makes life more meaningful. And, you’ll enjoy it more - and get compensated for it.

Do less - but do it really freaking well. (see below)

Subtract: The Untapped Science of Less

I recently led a leadership course with some incredible startup founders and we talked about the insights from this book.

It’s human nature to think more is better and less is worse.

How would you balance this lego bridge?

More kids think to take a block away, but as adults our first instinct is to add another block.

The reality is that simpler is often better. Whether it’s subtracting what you do at work or in your personal life, this book presents a whole new perspective on how to change what you do.

Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left take away.
— Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

It’s so easy to keep adding more things we should be doing - but then we don’t stop doing what doesn’t serve us anymore.

Or if we do stop something, and it wasn’t a conscious decision, guilt might still trickle into our brain that we quit without making an agreement with ourselves that this was the right decision.

This leads to a feeling of overwhelm - get some of your time back, and more of your life, when you Subtract.

Think

What Can You Take Away?

Think about 3-5 things you do that takes up some of your time - whether at work or in your personal life.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I need to do this?

  • If so, how can I spend 50% less time doing it?

The more we think outside the box, the more solutions present themselves that we never previously considered.
