Focus

Stress at Work

There’s a ton of stats about burnout and stress at work (see Stat of the Day) - but this one really got me…

71% of employees have broken up or even divorced their partner due to work-related stress.

That’s nuts.

Since the pandemic, companies have been in all-out growth mode. But the party ended last year with the rise of interest rates (aka - no more free money).

Companies are still competing on growth - but now doing it with smaller teams.

Tech and media companies are now making over $2M in revenue per employee and cuts like the 17% RIF at Spotify increased the stock price by 137%.

But what’s the real cost?

Instead of focusing solely on profits, companies have the opportunity to create massive value for their teams - like giving them a sense of purpose, a community to combat loneliness, and financial security.

This is what creates a meaningful and fulfilled life - and that should be the goal of any leader who has the opportunity and the responsibility to lead a team or company.

It’s apparently what most people want in a job - even younger employees low on cash:

The question for you is - what’s the right blend of money AND "feel good" characteristics of the job (team, leadership, creativity, growth opportunities, etc.) to energize you to stay for 10+ years?

Thanks to Headspace for calling out these results and putting out ways companies and leaders can support their teams.

Want more valuable nutrients?

Magnesium is a master mineral - we covered the benefits of Magnesium in Issue #21. The only form that gets into the brain is Magnesium Threonate (MgT).

The Momentous Magnesium Threonate supplement is clinically proven to improve cognitive function and enhance the quality of sleep (see video from Dr. Andrew Huberman at minute 2:19). So it’s become part of my personal supplement routine.

What We’re Doing

So this week, wanted to share a bunch of great stuff I’ve been using lately - most is good for health & longevity (no affiliation to anything listed below):

📖 What We’re Reading: Clear Thinking - by Shane Parrish

This is a quick read, but packed with practical insights and tips. The premise focuses on “the power of the pause” and how to live in a world where you RESPOND with your logical brain, and not just REACT with your reptillian brain.

What We’re Listening To: Scott Galloway Podcast

Prof. Galloway is an acquired taste. To some he’s an egomaniac and to others he’s just really f***ing honest (prepping you for the language in this podcast!).

But his raw take on how we’ve come undone as a society by burying our faces in our screens and not talking to each other is next level. Hard to not listen to this pod and want to call up a friend to go hang out - in real life.

What We’re Testing: NuCalm

Got this from a good friend and Thrive25 reader - it’s music with a purpose. The sounds align with your brain waves to either get you pumped up, better focused, or ready for a deep sleep.

It claims to be an awesome tool for stress and sleep so I’m giving it a test run.

What We’re Doing: YOGABODY

For anyone who sits too much at a desk - sitting weakens our glutes and completely messes up our posture and body alignment. If you’ve got bad knees, hip problems, or even shoulder issues - it probably starts with sitting all day long.

These videos are approachable for anyone who’s looking to get more strength, mobility, and flexibility.

What We’re Using: America the Beautiful National Park Pass

Hitting up multiple national parks this year? For $80 you can get unlimited access to every park in the U.S.

It’s a great option if you’re hitting up Utah - say Moab - with two nearby national Parks, Arches and Canyonlands, with others like Zion not too far away.

Laugh

SmartLess + John Oliver

What’s better than listening to Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes talk about nothing? Talking about nothing with John Oliver.

Logic Equations

There are five variables - A, B, C, D, E - with five possible values - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. None of the variables can share the same number. Based on the following equations, what do the variables equal:

  1. A + D = 5

  2. B + D = 8

  3. B + C = 9

Solving this one is a little easier using the grid through process of elimination.

** Brain Games Answer **

Answer: Yellow are the values for the variables. A=2, B=5, etc.

Why?…

  • First, solve for B in equation (3). B = 9 - C. C ≠ 1, 2, 3 and B can only equal 4 or 5

  • Rearrange equation (2) to D = 8 - B. If B can only be 4 or 5 and all values are unique, then B = 5 and D = 3

  • Adjust equation (1) to A = 5 - D. If D = 3, then A = 2

  • If B, C and D ≠ 1, 2, then A and E must be 1 or 2. E = 1

  • All the other values are assigned, so C = 4
