Rohan Bopanna

There was a first-time grand slam champion at the Australian Open this year - no, I’m not talking about 22-yr old Jannik Sinner who took down Novak Djokovic in the semifinals en route to the men’s singles title.

I’m talking about Rohan Bopanna.

Rohan just became the world’s #1 ranked double player after winning Down Under.

Why is this so cool?

Well for starters - he seems like a pretty awesome guy, a favorite among his peers on the tour, and he started a tennis academy and foundation for kids in his hometown of Bengaluru (Bangalore), India.

And…in two weeks (March 4th) he’s going to turn 44. That’s a full year older than me!

Talk about a long road to success. In all his time playing tennis, Rohan had moderate success - but no breakouts. Then his knees started to give out on him - he was constantly getting pain injections just to stay on the court.

It looked like his playing days were over, but during the pandemic he took some time off and found Iyengar Yoga. This specific practice is focused on body alignment and breathwork.

From the yoga - “My mind felt relaxed and calm,” said Rohan.

And the pain in his knees? “Completely gone.”

Unfortunately, that didn’t translate to success on the court. Rohan went four months in 2021 without winning a single match. Again for most 40-somethings this would put an end to any athletic aspirations.

But he was still enjoying himself so he stuck with it and found a new doubles partner, Matthew Ebden - a 36-yr old himself, and they quickly found a chemistry that translated to victories.

For a glimpse into their immediate success - check out this resume as a duo in 2023:

It finally came together in Melbourne last month - winning the elusive Grand Slam title. Now he’s eyeing the doubles competition at the Olympics in Paris this summer.

Most of us would have quit on our dreams at multiple points along this journey. But Rohan saw the long-road, not just the daily grind.

Plus, he put himself into such a positive mindset that it wasn’t just about the outcomes (winning), but enjoying the journey.

With how much I’m enjoying traveling and competing, I don’t see a reason to stop. I’m playing the best tennis of my career.
— Rohan Bopanna

The Body - A Guide for Occupants

Great, fun read from Bill Bryson for anyone that wants to learn about how our body works without feeling like they have to go back to high school biology. Bryson has a knack for making complex things easier to understand (we’re trying our best to do that too).

Angel Investors

This is another version of Einstein’s* problem (Issue #77). Five angel investors are side by side talking about their latest investments. Each one lives in a city, made an investment last month and is interested in specific companies. Who is interested in Biotech companies?

  1. The investor who lives in San Francisco is somewhere between the investor who invested $5 million last month and the investor who lives in Los Angeles, in that order.

  2. At the fourth position is the investor interested in Healthcare companies.

  3. The investor who invested $3 million last month is somewhere between the investor wearing the Red tie and the investor who invested $2 million last month, in that order.

  4. At the fifth position is the investor interested in Internet companies.

  5. The investor wearing the Red tie is somewhere to the left of the investor interested in Healthcare companies.

  6. The investor that lives in Miami is next to the investor interested in Clean tech companies.

  7. The investor wearing the Red tie is somewhere between the investor who invested $5 million last month and the investor wearing the Black tie, in that order.

  8. At one of the ends is the investor who did a $4 million investment last month.

  9. Matt is next to the 45-year-old man.

  10. Pierre is somewhere to the right of the investor wearing the Blue tie.

  11. The 40-year-old man is next to the investor interested in Healthcare companies.

  12. The man wearing the Red tie is somewhere between the man wearing the Green tie and the youngest man, in that order.

  13. The investor wearing the Red tie is next to the investor who lives in Atlanta.

  14. Dave is exactly to the left of the 30-year-old man.

  15. The investor interested in Biotech companies is next to the investor who lives in Atlanta.

  16. The 35-year-old man is somewhere between Adam and the investor interested in Software companies, in that order.

  17. The 45-year-old investor is exactly to the right of the investor that invested $2 million last month.

  18. The investor wearing the blue tie is interested in Software companies.

  19. The 40-year-old man is next to the man wearing the Purple tie.

  20. At the first position is the investor who lives in New York.
