Inspiration | The One Thing

A good friend recently posed this question to me -

“What’s the one thing - just one - that would make 2024 awesome?”

It really stops you. It’s easy to create a list of goals - but how do you get down to just one??

The one thing is the outcome that ties all the habits and processes together to make it happen.

For example - Max wants to be more patient in 2024. This is #1 for him to be even closer with his family as the kids grow.

But it’s not as simple as just saying “I’ll be more patient”. This requires multiple habits and processes:

  • Consistently Working Out - he’s got a better mental state after breaking a sweat (we all do)

  • Taking a Beat - he’s got to break the instant reaction of showing his frustration to pause and respond more thoughtfully (Issue #196)

  • Managing Stress - let’s be honest kids + a startup is rough. He’s got to get back to the daily meditation and breathwork that keeps him in better control of his own emotions

  • Building Empathy - I’ll be the first to tell you that Max excels here, but none of us are so good we can’t get better at putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes to really understand them and why they do/act the way they do (especially kids)

So it might look seem like Max is just doing one thing - but there’s a lot of work under the surface where he’s going to dramatically improve as a dad, a partner, and as a human.

That one thing can be anything - I’ve heard all kinds of different answers:

“To spend more time with [fill in - this person].”

“To fully recover from my knee surgery and crush a half-ironman.”

“To spend the entire summer in San Diego.”

“To close a $50 million dollar investment fund.”

All of these require so much work and daily commitment - but at the same time, are so simple for a clear guide to shape action and lead to an awesome year.

So that leaves us with the final thought for 2023…

What’s the one thing that will make 2024 awesome for you??

What We’re Reading | The Align Method

We highlighted a video from Aaron Alexander on hip flexibility back in Issue #5 and have included many of his ideas across our issues. The Align Method centers on five daily optimizations that can be easily integrated into any workout, mindfulness practice, or daily life activity:

  • Floor Sitting

  • Hanging

  • Hip-Hinging

  • Walking

  • Nose Breathing

This book is a great guide to focus on posture and set a foundation to support all of our goals in 2024.

Moment of Fun | Christmas Morning

Hope this didn’t happen at your home…

** Brain Games Answer **

45

The key is “at least” - find the fewest people that might speak all three languages. 10 don’t speak Spanish, so those can’t speak all three, same with the 20 that don’t speak Italian and 25 that don’t speak Mandarin. If we assume all three of these groups have no individuals that overlap, then just add them up to be 55. So 55 “at most” do not speak all three, which means “at least” 45 do (100 - 55 = 45).
