The more you practice the art of thankfulness, the more you have to be thankful for.
— Norman Vincent Peale

The winning time of the Tampa 5K Turkey Trot by a 29 yr-old - that’s under a 4:45 mile pace. This year had nearly 5,000 runners supporting the YMCA on a perfect 59°F Thanksgiving morning.

Inspiration

Make it out for a post-Thanksgiving run yet?

I felt good about running my 4 miles yesterday - but then thought about how this compared to Harvey Lewis.

There’s the Big Dog's Backyard Ultrarace to see who can run the longest.

It’s a crazy race…

All runners run a 4-mile loop (4.16667 to be exact) and have to finish in under one hour. Because as soon as the next hour begins they need to get back to the start line and do it again.

So if you finish in 40 min, then you get a 20 min rest before the next loop.

This continues until no one is able (or willing) to run the next loop in an hour.

When I heard about this I thought that the winner probably ran all day and that after 24 hours someone ran about 100 miles. I was wrong…

Harvey Lewis completed 450 miles - running 108 loops (hours) without any more rest than the time he had between loops from 7am on Saturday, October 21st until 7pm on Wednesday, October 25th.

Let that sink in - four and half days of nonstop running every single hour. And no, there wasn’t a break at night. There are two loops - one through the woods during the day and one on the road with streetlights at night.

Lewis had been averaging 52:23 per loop - leaving him with less than 8 min of rest for the final 10 hours.

But even with this short time, Lewis had a strategy for sleep.

Working with Todd Anderson of Dream Recovery, Lewis used a mask and earplugs and did 10 cyclic sighs (2 deep breaths in - 1 big exhale - see Issue #136) to calm his nervous system. It didn’t work right away, but he was eventually getting micro-naps of 1-5 minutes.

How does the human body keep going like this?

Said Lewis - “Your brain gets into a certain mode. It’s different from the normal human mode. As soon as the race was over, an hour later my body had cooled down, and getting to the tent about 20 meters away was laborious. But when you’re into that mode of being, it draws in this special energy that’s deep within us. There are powers that exist to push us beyond what seems reasonable.

How does someone feel after such a grueling challenge?

Honestly, I just feel my ribs are a little bruised, but other than that I feel really great and mentally I’m really excited about the possibilities that Big’s opened up in terms of pushing even further limits. So, I’m feeling very well.

For us mere mortals we’ll stick with 1, 2, maybe 3 or even 5 loops.

Either way - find your limit and push right through.

What We’re Listening To | New Blue Sun

After 17 years, André 3000 is back! One-half of the hip-hop duo Outkast, André 3000 finally drops his long-awaited solo album.

…except it’s not rap. Instead, it’s cosmic flute experimentation. The warning label is a little different than the Outkast days - Warning: No Bars. With track titles like “Ants To You, Gods to Who?” and “That Night In Hawaii When I Turned Into A Panther And Started Making These Low Register Purring Tones That I Couldn’t Control … Sh¥t Was Wild” - it’s out there, but the experiment is…beautiful. Fresh off a week on perception, this may change yours during a walk outside.

We all have aspirations, ideas or plans but isn’t it the most awesome when life surprises us in a way that becomes greater than anything we could have imagined?

Brain Games | Playing Cards

Four playing cards, one of each suit, lie face down on a table. They are a three, a four, a five, and a six.

  • The cards on either side of the four are black.

  • The club is to the right of the three but not next to it.

  • The spade is to the left of the heart.

  • The middle two cards add up to an even number. Neither of them is a club.

Can you determine the cards’ suits and their order?
