Issue #261: The Arctic Cowboys Make History

Good morning. It’s Saturday, November 4th.

Today’s Quick Win

NOTE: It doesn’t have to be paddling thousands of miles in the arctic. See Inspiration below.

  • Inspiration: Arctic Cowboys

  • Bucket List: Route 89

  • Brain Games: Kentucky

  • Question: Hibernate or Celebrate

If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus; and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.
— Bruce Lee

This Week

This week we explored how to combat our natural tendencies to hibernate during the winter - figuring out the best ways to transition from summer to winter and maintaining healthy habits.

Issue #259 - November 1st is a great day to set goals - the shorter 2-month goal timeframe is more attainable than annual resolutions and you can continue your momentum from the summer as the weather turns. Fight the urge to stay inside and eat more - get outside and exercise.

Issue #260 - Friluftsliv, a Norwegian concept, is a love for outdoor life year-round. Discover how embracing the cold boosts health and happiness, and stay active with our cold-weather tips.

Inspiration | Arctic Cowboys

You know who’s not afraid to get outside in the cold - West Hansen.

West and his team the “Arctic Cowboys” just kayaked (yes - with a paddle) over 1,500 miles through the entire Northwest Passage.

The trip took over 100 days as the team of four fought through 15-foot waves and freezing temps.

Beyond just being amazed what we as humans can actually do - I ask the question of “why take on such a challenge?

This isn’t the first such expedition for West. He was the first to go from the starting source of the Amazon to the the mouth of the world’s longest river in the Atlantic Ocean. He paddled 4,200 miles through jungles, crazy whitewater and areas run by dangerous drug cartels. (see VIDEO)

As for the Northwest Passage specifically - with the warming arctic this will eventually become a trading route that ships will be able to go through 12 months a year. For West and the team - they wanted to take in the beauty of these glaciers and clean waters before it becomes a superhighway.

I’m constantly amazed by what we’re capable of as humans. Don’t ever let yourself think you can’t do something when it’s pretty obvious you absolutely can.

Bucket List | Route 89

No doubt you know Route 66, but have you heard of Route 89? There’s a stretch of over 1,200 miles that includes 10 national parks, from Glacier National Park in Montana to the Grand Canyon. And it’s not just the parks - there’s countless other areas to explore in between.

Need some inspiration - a 3-year old, Journey Castillo, has seen all 63 national parks. How many have you visited?

Brain Games | Kentucky

Is the capital of Kentucky pronounced Louisville or Luee-ville?

Weekend Q | Hibernate or Celebrate

Are you mentally prepared for winter?

There’s no hiding the fact I’m a beach guy, and so is Max, but we’re also all about exploring - hiking, skiing, etc.

But in 2019 instead of a beach, Max’s family flew north to Canada for New Year’s. Now they keep going back and have a mindset to embrace the cold. When you live in Chicago - what else are you going to do to get through winter??
