The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.
— Albert Schweitzer

The number of people diagnosed with skin cancer every day in the U.S. (source). Just a bit of foreshadowing for the Inspiration below.

This Week

This week we covered the value of community in your Health & Longevity journey.

Issue #256 - positive connections, even brief, improve our mindset and strengthen our personal brand (what others think of us when we’re not around). Each day presents opportunities to enhance our wellbeing and influence others positively through our choices.

Issue #257 - "Illuminators" – uplift others through genuine interest and engagement, while "Diminishers" center attention on themselves. To enhance connections in daily encounters: be genuinely curious, listen actively, and validate by echoing responses.

Inspiration | The Best Young Scientist

Where were you at age 14?

Was it helping cure the world of skin cancer?

Heman Bekele was just named “America’s Top Young Scientist” - winning the 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

Heman, a high school freshman in Virginia, created a “skin cancer treating soap” that came about thanks to his interest in biology and technology.

Skin cancer can be deadly - but fortunately across all five stages of melanoma the 5-year survival rate is between 94-99%, depending on when it is identified.

But that’s in the U.S - not in sub-Saharan Africa where care is much less available. Heman lived in Ethiopia until he was 4 and found a deep passion for helping those that weren’t receiving healthcare to treat this cancer.

So how did a young kid develop a bar of soap that costs about $0.50 and treats skin cancer?

Heman combined fairly simple compounds together to stimulate dendritic cells - which are part of our immune system and protect our skin cells.

I’ll let him tell the rest of the story - he does a way better job than I can to describe both his invention and the science behind it:

Talk about the future looking bright when we’ve got kids like Heman making a real difference in boosting health & longevity across the globe!

What We’re Reading | How to Know a Person

Our first repeat author - and there’s good reason.

David Brooks, bestselling author of "The Road to Character" and “The Second Mountain,” presents "How to Know a Person.” He’s become one of my favorite writers - transitioning from a political column in the NYTimes to one about how to become a better person. I couldn’t put down this book, which just came out this past Wednesday. His words surpass any others I’ve read about not only the importance in connecting with others and making them feel significant - but actually how to do this (our social learning has gotten lost). In a world that increasingly feels like we’re all fighting - here’s a guide to coming back together.

Brain Games | Family Tree

It’s not easy to figure out who’s who when the Brewer family gets together. The brother of Nick’s uncle Manny is named Mark. Lisa’s grandparents are Nick’s parents. Mark is married to Lisa’s grandma. The children of Angela’s daughter Sandra are named Lisa and Sasha. So who is Angela’s brother-in-law?

Weekend Q | Refresh Your Connections

Who are the 5 people in your life (relational or collective) that you should connect with more? How can you do this in an authentic manner?

Refresher - according to Dr. Vivek Murthy, there are 3 types of connection:

  • Intimate: your partner, spouse, confidant

  • Relational: your close friends, extended family that supports you

  • Collective: your community and neighbors
