When the ego dies, the soul awakes.
— Mahatma Gandhi

The number of hours per day the average American spends in leisure or sports activities. It’s not that we don’t have enough time - it’s how we’re spending our time - to recharge and optimize our health. (Bureau of Labor Statistics)

This Week

This week we explored work, identity, and ego and how all of these impact worklife and your Health & Longevity.

Issue #250 - work is often our identity and defines our status - but at a great expense of who we really are as humans. Your professional life can create purpose and fulfillment, but should not come at the expense of your health, cause burnout or focus on impressing others. Check out our best tips to find the right balance for work.

Issue #251 - we've experienced unprecedented global growth over the last 200 years - but at what cost? We have more stress than ever. But this isn’t from the time we’re working - it’s when we ruminate. Learn to mentally 'shut off' work to reduce stress and improve mental health.

Inspiration

He’s now the marathon world record holder - becoming the first person ever to break the 2:01 mark in a sanctioned race.

The crazy part - he’s only 23 and broke the record in just his third marathon.

Break down what it means to run 26.2 miles in exactly two hours (ok 2 hours and 35 seconds).

That’s a 4:36/mile pace.

Or think of it another way - that’s 69 seconds for one lap around the track. I could do that for one lap, but not any more than that. Kiptum did 105.5 laps at that speed!

And - he gets even stronger as the race goes along - his second 13.1 miles was under an hour (59:47) and his fastest mile was at mile 22 (4:18/mile pace).

This isn’t about getting all of us to go lace up our shoes - although probably not a bad idea.

It’s just another example of how freaking amazing the human body is. Most of our limits are what we put on ourselves - they exist only in our mind, but not in reality.

We talked about this before (see Issue #62) from author Steve Magness (book = Do Hard Things) - our brains are designed to protect us. When we feel pain or it seems like we can’t keep up, our innate reaction is to shut down.

His suggestion is not give in to this reaction - but to take a beat and then thoughtfully respond. Am I actually in pain? What do I really feel? What do I need right now?

This doesn’t have to be about running - we do all kinds of things unconsciously. Even constantly checking our phone. Resisting that urge when you don’t need to look at your phone can be uncomfortable - but training our mental strength to respond how we want and not simply give in or react to it is a powerful tool for all aspects of our life.

Another tip he suggests is to substitute “I” for “you.”

When we say “I can do 100 pushups” that is intimidating and immediately calls up a set of emotions and fears.

But when you say “You can do 100 pushups” then it’s not about us anymore. Objectively, humans can do 100 pushups so why not go do it.

The point isn’t to just fight through the pain (which we’d all feel when trying to keep up with Kiptum). It’s about knowing we can do more than we ever thought - we just need to train our brain the same way we train all of our other muscles.

Don’t worry about setting world records - just go out there and set personal ones.

Thrive25 Partner Spotlight

Omega-6 has exploded in our diets. Too much of it increases inflammation and the rates of the big 4 killers - heart disease, diabetes/obesity, cancer, neurodegenerative (brain) disease - plus, IBS and autoimmune disease.

The ideal ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 is less than 4:1 (see Issue #22 on Omega-3), but vegetable oils like soybean, corn, and safflower oil have ratios more like 75:1. Cultured oil from Zero Acre Farms has less than 3% omega-6 linoleic acid (olive oil is 10%).
