When you hit your 90s, you think, ‘What would be some things I’d like to do?’
— Everett Kalin

The anticipated TV advertising spend by pharmaceutical companies in 2023. This is in line with an eye-popping 1,900% increase in digital advertising between 2011-2024. This $$ not only is to tell us about the drugs, but pays the bills for the news media. (Source)

Inspiration

Here’s the list of what I want to do with my kids when they’re in their 20’s.

Again, my youngest is only 2, so…let’s call it my What I can still do 25 years from now list (when I’ll be 67):

  • Play 2 sets of tennis

  • Win a game of H-O-R-S-E

  • Run a 5K Turkey Trot in under 25 minutes

  • Complete an Adventure Race/Mud Run

  • Scuba dive down at least 50 feet

  • Hike any trail we all want to tackle

These are things I loved to do with my parents, I still love to do now, and what I want to do with my kids in the future.

I thought about what Nicholas Kristof said about time with his kids:

“The best parenting I ever did was on the trails. Beginning when she was 14, my daughter and I hiked the entire 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada, over six years

In that brief window in which she was strong enough and I was not yet decrepit, together we sweated, bathed in rivers, lost toenails, dodged 14 rattlesnakes and a cougar, and were drenched in freezing rains. No better way to share companionship!”

“In that brief window…”

That’s why we’re so committed to Thrive25 - I don’t want just a brief window. I want it to be as long as possible - 25+ years.

It’s not about how long I might stick around - it’s about how long I can really live

You know who really extended that window - Everett Kalin.

Everett, 93, took on Half Dome in Yosemite this summer and became (unofficially) the oldest ever to make it to the top.

Starting in the Curry Village in the Yosemite Valley, Everett - along with his son Jon (57) and granddaughter Sidney (19) - hiked 15.7 miles with a 4,800 ft elevation gain (nearly a mile) to make it to the top of the trail and then back down to the valley.

It’s not just the elevation - there are parts of the trail by the waterfalls that get really slippery and require stable footing and other parts (as seen in the photo above) that are steep enough to require upper body strength to pull yourself up.

So the family took some extra time - spreading the hike over 3 days - but it’s no less an accomplishment for Everett or the memories for Jon and Sidney.

You know what’s so easy to forget though - it’s not just finishing that hike. It’s the work and the effort Everett put into training for months to be able to do it.

The reward might have been the dozens of people cheering him on at the top - but it was also in having a goal and a sense of purpose every day leading up to that adventure.

He’s stubborn as a mule. When he sets his mind to something, he’s going to do it. [When we got to the top] there were tears in everyone’s eyes. It was like paparazzi, everyone taking videos and photos. It was unreal. I’m choking up just talking about it now. The power of seeing him was so much joy and inspiration.
— Jon Kalin

Don’t let yourself think that anything is out of reach - we don’t need to be super athletes to experience whatever we want to in our life.

Alright…enough sitting around, I’m going for a run!

** Brain Games Answer **

To boil the egg in exactly 15 minutes, follow these four steps.

  1. Start both hourglasses as you start boiling the egg.

  2. After the 7-minute hourglass runs out, turn it over to start it again.

  3. Four minutes later, when the 11-minute hourglass runs out, turn the 7-minute hourglass again.

  4. Wait for the 7-minute hourglass to run out, which will take another four minutes and get you to exactly 15 minutes of boiling time.
