Issue #240: How Professional Athletes Visualize Success

Good morning. It’s Saturday, September 16th.

Today’s Quick Win

  • Inspiration: How Professional Athletes Use Visualization

  • What We’re Watching: Inception

  • Moment of Fun: Going Out (when we get older)

  • Question: What Will It Feel Like?

Do what you can with what you have, where you are.
— Teddy Roosevelt*

*Roosevelt attributes this quote to Squire Bill Widener.

The percentage of the information processed in the brain is visual…and we process images 60,000x faster than text. So, yes, we’re visual learners. These stats underscore the power to control what “we see” in our mind through visualization. (Source)

This Week

This week we went on a journey through the power of the mind.

Issue #238 - the 3 M’s of Ziva Meditation and importance of Manifestation on designing a life you love. Through it comes satisfaction in the process, not the goal.

Issue #239 - visualization is a tool to cultivate a growth mindset. It builds confidence, brings optimism, and creates a blueprint to move forward.

Inspiration

How powerful is visualization?

There was a study back in the 1950’s at the University of Chicago - basketball players were divided into three groups and given different practice instructions for one month:

  • Group 1 = practice shooting free throws for 1 hour per day

  • Group 2 = visualize yourself making free throws (but don’t actually touch a ball)

  • Group 3 = do nothing (no practice)

Unsurprisingly, Group 3 did not improve. But while Group 1 improved their shooting by 24%, Group 2 did almost as well and improved 23%!

Now the scientific rigor of this study can be questioned. But the “free throw” experiment has been done repeatedly since this initial study and the results clearly show that visualization can and does have a major effect on our ability to succeed.

The reason is that our brain responds similarly (not exactly the same) to when we experience an event and when we simply play it out in our mind.

So it’s not enough to simply picture it happening - it takes hours and hours of practice, hard work, and grit. But when you combine the physical work with the mental work - that’s when the magic happens.

Check out the stories of some famous athletes and how they use visualization to be at the top of their game.

This isn’t just something for professional athletes - it’s a tool for all of us to create the vivid image of what we want in our future and the pathway to get there.

What We’re Watching | Inception

It’s been 13 years, so not a bad time to brush up on Inception and relive the time and feelings you associate with this movie. Great movie to pair with a week talking about the mind and visualization.

Moment of Fun | Going Out

Let’s just say how we think about going out changes as we get older - classic from my favorite comedian right now Nate Bargatze:

Weekend Q

What goal are you working towards?

What will it feel like when you achieve it?
