Health is the soul that animates all the enjoyments of life, which fade and are tasteless without it.

Increase in work satisfaction if we have a best friend at work or not - that goes for us guys too. (Gallup)

This Week

This week we explored how connections at work affect our health & longevity.

Issue #220 - we work the majority of our waking hours (100K hrs by the time we’re 65). Achievement is most meaningful when it is relational. Get to know your colleagues.

Issue #221 - working outside an office can be awesome, but without that in-person connection it can be lonely too. Here’s tips to make the most of the flexible schedule.

Inspiration | A Space for Connection

The latest tech “downturn”* eliminated 150,000 jobs.

It also took away the infamous perks from the biggest Silicon Valley mega offices - Google employees fed their families with food from a personal chef, but now the company is skimping on snacks.

But the even bigger value of these offices was hidden in plain sight.

Steve Jobs rejected the plans for Pixar to build three separate office buildings - for computer scientists, for animators, and for executives.

Instead he built a single building with this massive atrium that seems like a complete waste of space. But he subtly made it so that nearly every employee would have to go through the atrium throughout the day - to go to the cafeteria, a meeting room, and even to hit up the bathroom.

Steve realized that when people run into each other, when they make eye contact, things happen.
— Brad Bird - Director of The Incredibles and Ratatouille

Is it a coincidence that Pixar’s latest movies have flopped after years of not working together in the office like they used to?

These serendipitous encounters can be awesome - but sometimes we need a little nudge too.

Adam Grant talks about how it’s not throwing work happy hours. Most of the time these simply put people into their small groups of people they already know - it doesn’t foster deeper conversations.

Instead, companies should try to figure out how to get people together to solve problems - even if they are made up.

My wife recently had a company offsite. They started the agenda with the same task often given to kids - build the tallest tower with tooth picks and marshmallows.

Those 30 min created a massive ROI for the rest of the time with everyone together - it broke down walls and humanized everyone to foster the “real company problem solving” that would follow over the next few days.

When we see past “Jordan in sales” or “Mallorie in accounting”, we go from being a group of individuals to becoming a team - a team committed to the success of the business.

And the best part - it just feels good.

What We’re Listening To | Lex Fridman

Lex Fridman recently interviewed author, philosopher Yuval Norah Harari.

Harari is one of my favorite authors (Sapiens, Homo Deus, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century). It’s a really interesting conversation on the origin of humans, what’s happening in the world right now, and how AI is going to shape our future as a species.

Anyone up for trying Harari’s habit of silent meditation retreats that last weeks or even months??

It’s a thought-provoking pod that’s really worth the listen - guarantee you’ll learn something new. PRO TIP: Be prepared to break it up and listen in multiple chunks - it’s a long one.

Moment of Fun | Summer Heat & Kids

Any other parents feeling the heat this summer??

Brain Games | Fill Up a Pool

A swimming pool has four (4) faucets. The first can fill the entire pool with water in two (2) days, the second - in three (3) days, the third - in four (4) days, and the last one can fill the pool in 6 hours.

How long will it take to fill the pool using all 4 faucets together?

** Brain Games Answer **

There are 24 hours in one day, in one hour the first tap fills 1/48, the second tap fills 1/72, the third tap fills 1/96 and the fourth tap fills 1/6 of the pool. That is all together (6+4+3+48) / 288 [the lowest common denominator] = 61 / 288. That’s 0.2118 (21.18%) of the pool. Divide 1 (full pool) by 0.2118 (fill rate per hour) to get total hours to fill pool 100% = 4.72 hours.
