Issue #220: Your Co-Workers Matter

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 1st.

Go USA! We’re focused on getting sleep instead of staying up late/waking early New Zealand time - hopefully by the time you read this the USWNT is into the Knockout stages of the World Cup. (FOXSports)

I wish I had paid more attention to the people who had worked for me and around me and less to the problem at hand.
— Ellen Freund (from The Good Life)

The number of hours we will have WORKED by the time we’re 65. That’s the equivalent of 11.5 years. Compare that to the only 5,720 hours we will spend with friends (0.65 years). That’s nearly 20X more time with co-workers than friends!! (How We Spend our Time, Bureau of Labor Statistics)

From the Lab

If you could stop working without loss of income, would you?

For most of us - we need to work to live. But it can also be a massive benefit to our life.

Work is a place where we feel like we matter. That we’re having an impact on something - benefiting our clients, uplifting our co-workers, supporting our families, or giving meaning to ourselves.

Research proves out that it’s not so much “what we do at work” that matters - it’s who we do it with or for.

Robert Waldinger, head of the Harvard Happiness Study, writes in his book “The Good Place”, “Achievement is most meaningful when it is relational.

It’s about working together in the trenches.

This is actually why Thrive25 exists. Max and I have been friends for 30 years and said to each other more than once “we should work together.” You know - spend real time together instead of the monthly 30 min check-in calls between LA and Chicago.

It’s easy to let too much time pass by. Our brains inherently think that we have more time than we actually do. “Once I finish this project, then things will settle down” or “After I get this year’s bonus, then I’ll start looking for another job.”

Thing is - that risk aversion keeps us from making the changes we say we’re going to do and next thing you know, it’s 5 years later and you never found “the right time” to work with one of your best friends.

Now it hardly makes sense for everyone to just quit their job and start a company with their friend - guess we’ll find out if it makes sense for us to even do it 😁.

NOTE: If you do become a founder or entrepreneur, I can tell you from my experience of working with 150+ startup clients - a trusted co-founder that you respect and enjoy as a friend can be a game-changer in both the journey and the outcome of that venture.

But regardless, everyone should focus on the relationships that are available to us in our jobs and know these are the people we’re spending our waking hours with - we should make the most of it.

Get To Know Your Co-Workers

  1. Reach out - don’t be shy in getting to know them beyond the superficial stuff at work (man it’s hot this summer).

  2. Mentor - as we get older there’s a massive opportunity to support others beyond formal leadership. Great read “From Strength to Strength” and also seeing what Scott Galloway is doing in his personal time to help 20-something guys.

Don’t Shy Away from People Who Are Different

Despite efforts to create diversity, it’s easy to run back to our corners when it comes to how we think or our ideas (e.g., politics). But as Monica Guzman writes in “I Never Thought of It That Way” - turn your certainty of someone into curiosity.

Find out more about that person, their background so you can understand what makes them who they are. “If there’s one question I want to persuade (people) to ask more often, it’s ‘What am I missing?’.”

Work is a huge part of life - these relationships matter to our health and longevity just like the relationships with our partner, families and friends.

Health & Longevity in the News

NFL to Pokémon: After 7 bruising seasons in the NFL, LB Blake Martinez hung up his cleats to sell Pokémon cards. Now he’s built a mini-empire, bringing in over $10M in annual revenue without the head trauma. (The Athletic)

Me Nap, Big Brain: Yeah, but how’s your cognition? Researchers analyzed data in the UK Biobank and determined people who regularly nap have larger brains - by about 1.3%. But there don’t appear to be any cognitive benefits to the increased brain size. (Big Think)

Ever Heard of AMOC?: Pronounced “AY-mock” - it’s just a fancy acronym for North Atlantic Ocean currents. Climate change will kill the Amazon rainforest, collapse Arctic permafrost and Antarctic ice sheets…unfortunately, we’ve heard this. But what about stalling ocean currents? 13K years ago this happened and set Europe into a deep freeze for a millennium. Scientists say the next North Atlantic stall could come by 2100. (NYTimes)

Tuesday QR | Golden Turmeric Milk

It’s a drink. It’s a snack. It’s a time-honored Ayurvedic self-care ritual called “Haldi Ka Doodh.” And now we know that it’s a DNA methylation powerhouse. This tasty beverage gets its color from turmeric - the “clean-up crew” for life’s biochemical processes. Mix yourself up a cup whenever you need a pick-me-up.

Pro Tip: Go 3x, 5x, 10x on the spices and store in a glass jar for the future. Just add a rounded 1½ tsp of the mixture to the allotted amounts of coconut milk and honey and you’re good to go.
