Issue #165: The Ageless Golfer

Good morning. It’s Friday, April 7th. If you missed yesterday’s issue (No - we didn’t mean to call it “TBD,” but maybe subconsciously I didn’t want everyone to see my surf photo compared to the barrel) - it’s on “The Power of Water” and you can check it out HERE.

Today’s Quick Win

*Shooting your age is a goal for golfers as they get older. It means completing a round of 18 holes (avg par 72) in fewer strokes than you are years old. But the message is the same no matter your favorite sport or interest - never stop playing!

The old Lakota was wise. He knew that man’s heart away from nature becomes hard; he knew the lack of respect for growing, living things soon led to a lack of respect for humans too. So he kept his youth close to its softening influence.
— Luther Standing Bear (OGLALA SIOUX)

The percentage of North Americans who live in urban areas (Europe is a bit lower at 74.9%) - making it more challenging to get out in nature. (World Economic Forum)

So after this week you ready to get outside?? Remember NatureDose is the free app to help remind you to get out there everyday. It’s not really an app - more like an anti-app that gives you value without being stuck to a screen.

Inspiration | Gary Player

Nearly 64 years ago, in July 1959, Gary Player won The Open Championship.

He would go on to become one of the greatest golfers of all time - and even today is one of only five golfers to win all four of golf’s major championships. (The others are Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, and Gene Sarazen - who lived to be 97).

Hailing from South Africa, Player had a pretty incredible start to his golf career. His mother passed away from cancer when he was only 7 and his dad took out a loan to purchase his first set of clubs.

He didn’t play his first round until he was 14 years old, but turned pro just three year later. It didn’t take long for Player to start winning - something he did 159 times around the world.

Today at the ripe young age of 87, Player continues to live up to his nickname on the PGA Tour of “Mr. Fitness.”

So what’s his secret?

I am in the gym 90 minutes a day. I push 300 pounds with my legs, run the treadmill, do 200 sit-ups and exercise my fingers as well — the arthritis wants to get you. Don’t let it.

He also has been a bit ahead of the curve when it comes to those cold plunges - saying he’s been doing ice baths for 70 years.

He goes on to say,

Exercise is only 30 per cent — diet is the rest. The greatest destroyer of mankind is over-eating. Two meals a day for me and I consider bacon and white bread poison. Sugar is a killer, but I love chocolate — do not judge me, please. With all of that, I play golf five times a week.

Player has scored lower than his age 3,071 times in a row - a world record. Most people would like to do it once.

But there might be one other secret that was key to Player’s longevity - his wife. (see Issue #126)

Vivienne passed away in 2021 - she and Player had 6 kids, 22 grandkids, and 2 great-grandkids.

You know, I was with her 72 years. Everyone thinks their wife is the best, but there’s no way you could have a better wife than mine. I miss her every day. But here’s the conclusion — I sat at the greatest table with the greatest food in the world and I left the table content.

Brain Games | Dancing

Figure out how to floss like your kids…oh wait, Max was just told by his 10-yr old son that’s sooo old. The kids are all about the griddy…hmm 🤔. Either way, go find a new dance move and bust it out. Or find some lessons - ballroom, salsa, hip-hop, you name it - just get out there (dance parties at home can be fun!!).

Why: Increase your brain’s processing speed and memory

Inspiration: College

Thanks for another great week! Here’s a little Jack Johnson to kick off the weekend - see you on Monday!
