From the Lab

I normally go to the gym 3-4x per week. But that’s changed dramatically since training for this triathlon.

Now pretty much every workout is outside - pool or beach for the swims, 10-25 mile loops for my bike ride, and running along the bay here in Tampa.

Even my strength workouts are outside - I’m fortunate to have some basic equipment outside on the waterfront (pull-up bar & bench - what else do you need?).

It’s actually been a game-changer in terms of how I view my workouts. Even though I looked forward to the endorphins from that bootcamp-style class - it’s been great to spend so much more time in the sun and fresh air.

Though a small study, there is now research that shows exercising outside actually improves cognitive function more than just working out. Specifically - attention and working memory improve from walking/running outside. In this study, participants did better on the Stroop Test.

So it would also make sense that working (not working out) outside is also a good thing. Enter Bart Foster.

Owner of Business Outside and author of a book by the same name, Bart is part of a movement for us to reimagine what it means to work by bringing business outside.

By getting outside antiquated corporate norms and into nature - we can increase creativity, better connect with colleagues and just feel better mentally.

So for today’s challenge:

  1. How can you incorporate more outdoor exercise? (if you’re still experiencing winter where you live - I know some great running shoes that won’t let you fall in snow/ice)

  2. Whether you work remotely or in the office - how can you create a culture of working outside more frequently?

Would love to hear ideas of what Thrive25 readers are doing so that we can share with everyone else! Share with us HERE.

Health & Longevity in the News

#MenDoPilatesToo: Still behind yoga in popularity (all you need is a mat), pilates is gaining in popularity, especially among men. Looking to lengthen your muscles and increase range of motion - try our Friday Flex videos. (WSJ)

“Happiness in Intelligent People is the Rarest Thing I Know”: Straight outta Hemingway’s “Garden of Eden.” Intelligence can make you happier, but only if you see it as more than a tool to get ahead. Unhappy? Shift from money, power, pleasure and prestige and go for faith, family, friendship and service. (The Atlantic)

The Love-Hate Relationship of Performance Tracking: Data is all around us - in our car, on our wrist, in our body. For training, the question is how do we use it - as information or motivation. ”Augmented feedback” enhances performance, but is this just the Hawthorne Effect - we try harder when we’re being observed (even if it is by ourselves). Does it matter? (Outside)

Tuesday QR | Superfood Salad

Great salad full of veggies (kale, carrots, radishes), protein (edamame), healthy oils (avocado and hemp seeds), and brain food (walnuts). Make it on Monday and enjoy it for a few lunches (just be sure to keep out the dressing until serving).

PRO TIP: Try either the Creamy Citrus Dressing or go with your favorite from Primal Kitchen

Bucket List | The Masters

Jim Nantz season continues with a tradition unlike any other.

Max had the opportunity to attend Scottie Scheffler’s victory last year. Even though he checked that box - he’d still jump at the chance to go any time the opportunity presents itself.

With holes 11-12-13 dubbed “Amen Corner,” the setting embodies the spiritual, blended with nature as you walk through a beautiful, living nursery. Two great spots to check out if you get the chance - the aforementioned Amen Corner early in the morning with dew on the grass and a light fog over Rae’s Creek; the other being the nature walk to the left of #2.

Tell us if you get to go and Max will give you the inside scoop.
