Inspiration | Sir David Attenborough

At the ripe young age of 96, Sir David Attenborough just completed yet another documentary series - Wild Isles.

Attenborough joined the BBC in 1952 (71 years ago). After 20+ years, he had worked his way up to becoming the Director of Programming with the potential opportunity to run all of the BBC operations.

He could become the most powerful media leader in all of the UK. Instead, he resigned and took a different path.

Attenborough went back to his roots as a freelance broadcaster. Here’s a guy that was primed to run all of the BBC and instead - at the age of 46 - would start back at ground zero looking for his own stories to uncover.

Good thing he did - this eventually led to the documentary series, Life on Earth, followed by The Living Planet.

This would go on and on as he won multiple Peabody Awards (for the most powerful stories told on television, radio and online media), creating multiple docuseries of animals and regions of the world - regions like rain forests in Asia, deep in the ocean, and Antarctica.

All this work culminated in 2006 with the release of Planet Earth.

That could have been a career - here we are 17 years later and he’s still going on his mission to advocate for saving environments around the world. In 2022, the United Nations recognized Attenborough as a Champion of the Earth.

He not only has 32 honorary degrees, but 20 species named after him - including the Attenborosaurus.

So don’t be afraid to reinvent yourself - even if you think it’s too late. David Attenborough is proof that you can have a 50-yr second career - and we would never know who he is if he just “ran the BBC.”
