Issue #143: Don't Avoid Money

Good morning. It's Wednesday, March 8th.

Man sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.
— Dalai Lama

From the Lab

Just finished my ride. 1.5 hrs on the bike for me is a big deal - especially when I get a late start and have to deal with the blazing Florida sun (yes, even in March) and afternoon winds.

Pop off the jersey and shorts (even if I’m not fast I at least need to look the part).

I hop in the shower when I see another spot on my forearm. Hmm - that wasn’t there this morning (or was it?).

Eh - it’s probably nothing. Scrub up and pick up the kids.

We tend to avoid situations when there's a chance of negative news. If I don’t go to the dermatologist today then that spot is nothing - but if I go it could really ruin my day. Ah - I just have too much going on this week.

But this avoidance causes uncertainty - one of the biggest drivers of stress and anxiety. Unlike fear, which is temporary fight or flight, anxiety can last a whole lot longer and create massive strain on the body and brain.

Negative uncertainty happens when there is the conscious awareness, or subjective experience of ignorance - in other words, we are choosing not to know something.

We do this when we fear medical test results or that we’re over budget this month or we won’t have enough for retirement.

When do you check your portfolio - in 2020 when you’ve got 40% returns or 2022 when it just keeps going down?

As we said yesterday, money isn’t the goal - what money enables for our current and future life is the goal.* But it’s important to always be certain of your finances - just like your health.

The wave is coming whether you see it or not - but when you face it you can ride it; when you turn your back it'll crash on top of you.

I’d much rather get rid of that spot on my arm now or adjust my budget when I’m 42, then have Stage III cancer or find out too late that I won’t be surfing on the beach in my 60’s.

Think about your future self - face the waves.

*I also recognize that some people constantly check their portfolio - don’t let money consume you either, read: The Good Life

Health & Longevity in the News

How do We Gain Weight: There are two camps - Energy Balance and Carbohydrate-Insulin. The scientific debate rages on, but the sides are moving closer together. For now - you can control your weight by eating for stable blood sugar, exercising (even a little) daily, sleeping well and minimizing stress. (Levels)

Male Contraceptive Pill: Since the Pill was introduced in 1950 (and long before) contraception was mainly the responsibility of the woman or using condoms. There's now the potential for a male pill that just stops sperm from swimming and doesn't disrupt hormones. (Longevity Live).

Thriving in Death Valley: Despite its name, Death Valley is quite welcoming for most of the year. The National Park is just two hours from Vegas and boasts canyons, mountain peaks, sand dunes, and great hiking. (NYTimes)

What We’re Reading

National Geographic

National Geographic has reinvented itself recently. You might still be picturing the old yellow framed magazines - but they've got some interesting content when it comes to the latest science on health, in addition to those wacky stories about the pirate that took more treasure than Blackbeard or Captain Kidd. I don't include many in the Speed Read because of the paywall - but it's only $1/month if you want to check it out.
